Preparation of a foreign passport lasts from 1 to 4 months. Uncertainty in time creates inconvenience for citizens, since at the same time they need to purchase tickets and prepare for their vacation. Thanks to technological progress, it is not necessary to go to the office to check the readiness of your passport. You can find out whether your passport is ready on the Internet at certain official websites.
What does status mean?
The status determines the stage at which the case for issuing a foreign passport is located. The message accompanying the status shows the actions that the applicant should take:
- "Sent." When an applicant submits a form to receive a document, the system begins to check the entered information. If the checks are passed, the case is sent.
- "Registered". The review has begun. At this stage, the applicant should wait until the information is verified.
- "Return". If the checks are not passed, the case is assigned a "Return". This happens if the applicant submitted the application form twice (duplication occurs due to system failures) or entered incorrect data. You need to rewrite the application form and submit it again.
- "Accepted". The application was accepted by the Main Directorate for Migration. Next, you need to go to the Department of Internal Affairs of the MU Ministry of Internal Affairs, collect the necessary papers (preferably with photocopies), and pay the state fee.
- "Suspended." This means that the review was interrupted because the applicant did not make an appointment. If you do not appear at the migration service office within six months, the case will be closed.
- "Decor". All checks have been passed and the production of the international passport has begun. The applicant has to wait for the invitation.
- "Invitation". The document is ready and you can pick it up. The invitation will indicate the address, opening hours of the organization and documents that should be brought with you.
- "Closed". After the document is issued, the case is considered closed. If you do not bring the original papers on time, the case will be closed.

How to find out if your passport is ready via the Internet
There are three ways to check the readiness of a foreign passport online. All options are suitable for testing on adults and children.
Checking status through State Services
Online passport verification is available on State Services. Designed for those who submitted their application online. To use the service, authorization on the site is required.
After logging into your personal account, you need to do the following:
- Go to the “Notification Feed” item.
- On the page that opens, select the application regarding the passport.
- If there is a green icon opposite the item with the caption “Completed”, you can go to the Federal Migration Service.
If a case was filed through this service, it is not necessary to track the case through the portal. You need to enter a number or leave an email. After which, notifications about the status of the case will be automatically sent to the specified address. Upon completion of preparation, a message will be sent to your phone.
Website of the Main Directorate of Migration Affairs of the Ministry of Internal Affairs
This is a reliable verification service, but at times it provides inaccurate information, since employees may be working with an old database. Here are the instructions:
- Selecting a passport category. To check the status of an old-style international passport, you need to enter the place of registration, case number (written on the form) and date of birth. A new document is checked by entering the series and passport number.
- Enter the code shown in the photo and select “Submit”.
- Next, the results will be displayed on the screen. If the document is not generated, there will be no information about readiness.
It is important to note that data from the site does not have legal force as it may be inaccurate. Although information is constantly updated, it is not always up to date.
Autoinformer and SMS notifications
Automatic reporting does not work in all Main Departments of Internal Affairs of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, because many centers are not equipped with a multi-line telephone. This is mainly available to residents of large cities. Autoinformers provide information about migration registration, visa rules, and more. The ability to track the status of a “foreigner” is also present. However, most autoinformers are connected to old databases, so the information provided may be erroneous.
When submitting an application, a citizen can choose to be notified via SMS. This way he will regularly receive up-to-date information about the status of his passport without any effort.
The procedure for filing an application for a foreign passport through government services
To submit an application electronically, you need to register on the Unified Portal of State and Municipal Services of the Government of the Russian Federation.
How to do this is described step by step on my blog in the topic: “Government services - detailed instructions for registration.” I think this procedure will not be particularly difficult for you if you are at least a little familiar with the Internet.
So, go to your “Personal Account”, click “Electronic Federal Migration Service”, and then select what you need. Highlighted in green for a new passport, in red for an old one:
In the next window, after reviewing the information you are interested in, click “Get a service”:
I will not show all the stages of the application process. If you were able to register via the Internet for government services, then you’ll probably figure it out here too.
There are often difficulties in inserting a photo, since it must meet certain requirements, but don’t worry, there has been no time limit on the Internet connection when filling out personal data until today, so there’s nothing wrong with that.
Is it possible to track status by last name?
The network is full of services that provide the ability to check the status of a “foreigner” by entering a last name. However, it is not recommended to track readiness status in online services that only ask for a last name for verification. Most likely, the site is owned by scammers.
In Russia, tracking by entering a surname is, in principle, difficult to implement, since there is a high probability of stumbling upon statements of namesakes. The only reliable option for such verification is to contact the department of the passport office to which the application was submitted.
What to do if online verification does not work
If the check does not produce results, there are reasons and solutions:
- Check that the information entered is correct. Many people incorrectly indicate personal data (full name, passport number and series), so the system does not find the case. You must fill out the fields again and click on verification.
- Request again later. Sometimes verification services work with problems, so it is worth repeating the request after a few hours/the next day or using another online tracking method.
If you were unable to track your status in several services at once, you will need to call the Main Migration Department of the Ministry of Internal Affairs or visit a branch.
Phone call to the Main Department of Migration Affairs of the Ministry of Internal Affairs or personal message
Often this method is used by middle-aged or elderly citizens, because the younger generation is accustomed to looking for information on Internet resources.
Phone numbers can be found on the website of the Main Department of Migration Affairs of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, indicating the region of residence. This method has disadvantages:
- employees of the Ministry of Internal Affairs may search for information for a long time, so the answer to the question about the status will be delayed;
- difficulties arise in calling these numbers, as they are either busy or do not answer calls;
- Citizens by phone need to tell the employee their full name and passport details.
If you are unable to reach the employees of the desired Ministry of Internal Affairs, or cannot find the number, your only option is to visit the department in person. This is the most difficult and costly method, both materially and psychologically. However, you can trust in the reliability of the result. Employees will immediately inform you what status is assigned to the case, as well as approximately how many days are left before the “foreigner” is extradited.
It is recommended to make an appointment before going to the department. Thanks to this, long queues can be avoided.
Through MFC
To apply for a foreign passport through the MFC, you need to act almost the same as in Moscow when receiving a foreign passport through the migration service.
You just need to submit documents and an application not to the department of the Main Directorate of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, but to a convenient branch.
To find out the address of the nearest MFC branch that accepts documents for a foreign passport, you can contact the unified information service in Moscow - +7 (495) -777-77-77.
You can also make an appointment with a specialist using this phone number so as not to wait in line.
You can also check the addresses of “My Documents” departments in your area of the city on the official website. The list will indicate the contacts of each office, its operating hours, and the name of the manager.
But, unfortunately, the list of available services on this resource is not provided for every department. To find out exactly where to apply for a foreign passport in Moscow, it is better to contact the telephone hotline.
Otherwise, except for the place where the application is submitted, the process, timing and cost of registration will not differ in any way from the previous version.
The following video explains how to easily obtain a foreign passport through MFC branches:
Pros and cons of each method
Which method should I use? Below are comparative statistics for each verification method:
Verification method | Advantages | Flaws |
Public services | Promptness of response; Data relevance; No need to go to the MFC; Automatic notification if the application was written using the service. | The accuracy of the information is not 100%; You must log in to the site. |
Website of the Main Directorate of Migration Affairs of the Ministry of Internal Affairs | Instant response; Consultation with an employee; Latest data. | The system can work with outdated databases. |
Autoinformer | Automatic notification; Online checks. | The service is not available in all cities; Data may not be current. |
SMS messages | Prompt information; 100% accuracy; Check online; Automatic alerts. | The service is available mainly in large cities. |
Telephone call | No need to go to the department; Consultation with an employee. | Sometimes it's difficult to get through; The need to provide passport information. |
Personal visit | Result guarantee; Opportunity to consult with an employee. | Personal visit required; Takes time; Repeat visits may be required. |
Checking online takes a couple of minutes. But you need to go to the branch yourself if the deadlines for preparing papers are delayed and online services malfunction.
What is an electronic queue for a foreign passport?
An electronic queue is a kind of preliminary reservation of a place in a queue for a specific day. There are three ways to register:
- contact the department of the Main Department of Migration Affairs of the Ministry of Internal Affairs by phone number;
- use the Internet;
- use special electronic terminals.
In any of the above options, the provision of personal data will be a prerequisite.
A person who has registered a place in advance must appear at the appointed time to submit documents. If he does not arrive exactly on time, then other citizens will be served at that time. In this case, you will have to go through the registration procedure again.
What to do if your passport is not ready
If the passport is not ready, then there are 2 solutions:
- continue waiting;
- demand the issuance of the document before the completion of the checks.
If 1 month (documents submitted to the registration address) or 4 months (not to the registration address) have not passed since the submission of the papers, then you just have to wait for the end of the checks and a response from the FMS. If the allotted period has passed (1 and 4 months, respectively), the citizen may request that the document be issued within a short time. The fact is that the lack of data on background checks is not a reason for delaying the xiva. However, in order to request timely issuance of a passport, you need to receive a response from the FSB (this cannot be done without a response). You can also contact FMS employees and ask them to expedite the formation of the document if deadlines are running out.
Modern technologies allow you to remotely view the stages of document preparation. If the online check does not produce results, then perhaps a glitch in the system is to blame. You need to wait and try to enter the data again. If the document is not issued on time, you can write a complaint and demand delivery, but it is advisable to politely talk to the employees and come to a compromise.
