Does Abkhazia belong to Russia or is it a separate country?

What insurance do you need to take out for Abkhazia?

Every traveler must take out travel insurance. The only exceptions are tourists who vacation on a package tour, since insurance is already included in it. However, even in this case, it is recommended to renew your insurance yourself, since tours include the cheapest policies.

First of all, a tourist needs insurance to help in unforeseen circumstances. Therefore, it is important to choose a policy that works. In Abkhazia, the most common insurance cases are injuries and intestinal infections.

It is worth considering that infrastructure and medicine are also poorly developed in this resort, so you should not neglect the choice of good insurance.

When traveling with children, we recommend taking out ERV insurance. This policy has the largest range of options. This is one of the most expensive insurances, but at the same time, if an insured event occurs, you can definitely count on help.

For more budget-friendly options, we recommend taking out an Allianz policy. Despite the fact that the insurance is inferior in terms of the set of options to the previous one, the policy provides reliable assistance. It is the work of this company that determines how efficiently and quickly the tourist will receive assistance.

When purchasing insurance with Polis812, you can use a promotional code for a 15% discount.

Features of using “zagran” when crossing the border of the republic

So, foreign passports are not needed to enter the Transcaucasian country. Or rather, they are not required. If a citizen has a foreigner, he can take him on a trip if he wishes. And cross the border of Abkhazia from the Russian Federation according to this document.

However, here it is necessary to take into account one important nuance. Visiting Georgia with a foreign passport with a stamp indicating the passage of the Russian-Abkhaz border is not recommended. There is a high probability that with such a mark entry into Georgian territory will be prohibited.

Therefore, you need to either not present the “foreign passport” at all at the Abkhaz border when entering from Russia, or ask that the stamp about its crossing not be placed in the foreign passport. However, according to the latest information, at the Adler checkpoint, foreign citizens abroad are not subject to mandatory stamping. A stamp can be placed only at the request of the passport holder.

Note! When entering Abkhazia from Georgia, special permission from the Georgian authorities is required.

How to get to Abkhazia in 2021

Russians can enter Abkhazia in two ways:

  • On the Russian border through the Psou checkpoint. In order to get to this point, you need to fly to the city of Sochi, and from here to the border is no more than 10 km. You can get to the border by taxi or bus.
  • On the Georgian border through the Enguri checkpoint. In this case, tourists can get from Georgia to Abkhazia through the specified checkpoint, which is located 10 km away. from the city of Zugdidi.

Most tourists cross the border using the first option. At the Russian border you must go through customs and passport control. There you will need to show all documents and luggage. The same procedure is taking place on the Abkhaz side.

Those traveling on their own cross the border on foot via a pedestrian bridge (2 km). In the low season, for example, now - in the spring, checking documents will take no more than half an hour.

Entry into Abkhazia by car

It is also allowed to travel to Georgia by personal car. To do this, drivers need:

  • Present your registration document and driver's license.
  • If the car belongs to another person, you must present a power of attorney to export the car outside of Russia.
  • You need to pay a fee for crossing the border by car in the amount of 150 rubles.

Crossing the border with Abkhazia

Russians usually do not have any difficulties preventing them from crossing the border from Russian territory. However, there are nuances that you should be aware of.

From the Georgian side

You can visit Abkhazia from Georgia through the Ignuri checkpoint. Officially, only the Abkhaz side recognizes the existence of the border, while the Georgians consider Abkhazia their territory.

In order for Russians to visit Abkhazia while in Georgia, they need to obtain appropriate permission from the RA Ministry of Foreign Affairs. However, in practice such permission is issued extremely rarely. Therefore, Russian citizens are recommended to visit Abkhazia by entering through the Russian checkpoint Adler - Psou.

From Russia

First you need to get by any means of transport to the urban microdistrict of the city of Sochi - Adler. At a distance of approximately 11 km from the Adler railway station and airport there is the Adler-Psou checkpoint. There are two bridges across the river of the same name: pedestrian and automobile. Keep in mind that you will need to walk about 2 km across the bridge in order to get to Abkhazia.

Previously, tourists were required to take out insurance. At the moment, this provision has been canceled. There is also no resort fee.

Those traveling by car cross the border via a road bridge. Compulsory insurance and vehicle registration are not provided. Thus, Russian tourists, regardless of their method of travel, do not need to pay for anything at the border.

Documents for crossing the border

Residents of Russia must provide one of the following documents to the authorized border control officer:

  • internal passport of a citizen of the Russian Federation;
  • international passport;
  • official or diplomatic passport;
  • seafarer's passport (a ship's role or an extract from it is required).

No other documents are required.

If the tourist wishes, it is recommended to take out insurance in advance from one of the Russian insurance companies. You can choose the most appropriate option, include additional services at your discretion in your insurance policy, and find out the cost of medical insurance in Abkhazia on the Cherehapa instant insurance website. Payment for insurance is also carried out online, and the document is sent to the client’s personal email.

Cherehapa online health insurance service is a modern way to quickly and reliably obtain insurance for traveling abroad.

Documents for minor children

If you plan to travel with children, then additional documents will be required. Their content and quantity are determined taking into account the individual situation:

  1. If the child is under 14 years old, then it is enough to have a birth certificate with an insert confirming Russian citizenship;
  2. Children over 14 years old but under 18 must have a domestic or foreign passport to enter Abkhazia;
  3. If a minor citizen travels without parents, but accompanied by a third party, then a notarized document is needed, the content of which indicates the consent of one of the parents for the child to travel abroad;
  4. If a child crosses the border with one of the parents, then written consent from the other is not required.

For travelers with a personal car

Persons wishing to visit Abkhazia by personal transport must be prepared to provide a driver's license and registration certificate when crossing the border.

However, if the car does not personally belong to the visitor, then a power of attorney to drive the car, certified by a notary, is required.

In a notarized power of attorney for the use of a car, the clause regarding permission to travel abroad is mandatory.

Customs regulations

The following goods can be exported from the Russian Federation to Abkhazia without declaration and payment:

  • quantity of alcoholic drinks per person – 2 liters;
  • cigarettes – no more than 200 pcs per person;
  • fuel – 20 liters excluding the fuel in the car’s refueling tank;
  • jewelry – 5 pieces;
  • clothing, sports equipment, other goods for personal use;
  • currency in the amount of 3,000 dollars (amount over 3,000 must be declared, but exporting more than 10,000 dollars is prohibited).

You are also allowed to carry a portable typewriter, computer, calculator, TV, musical instruments, camera, video camera, baby stroller and more.

You can import to Russia from Abkhazia:

  • 3 liters of alcohol (for quantities over 3 liters you need to pay a customs fee, but transporting more than 5 liters is prohibited);
  • 250 g of tobacco products per person;
  • 3 liters of honey (only in original packaging);
  • goods not intended for commercial activities, the total value of which is no more than 1,500 euros, and the weight of which is no more than 50 kg.

It should be noted that the bulk of checks are carried out by Russian border guards. Abkhazians do not carry out special searches. In order to control sanitary standards, special attention is paid to home-made products that do not have original packaging (cheese, sour cream, eggs, honey, etc.).

It is prohibited to export boxwood, eucalyptus and beekeeping products – propolis – from Abkhazia.

It is prohibited to transport weapons of any kind, stun guns, or explosives across the border.

Entry denied

The number of cases of Russians being denied entry at the Russian-Abkhaz border is approaching zero. If all necessary documents are provided, residents of the Russian Federation usually visit Abkhazia without hindrance.

A possible refusal may be due to the document’s expiration date or the presence of debts for which enforcement proceedings have been opened and a ban on traveling abroad has been imposed. These two issues can be solved in simple ways: apply for a new international passport or eliminate the reasons for the invalidity of the internal passport (for example, replacing it at 20 and 45 years old, changing your last name, etc.), and paying off debts.

Denial of entry may occur if you are entering from Georgia and the traveler’s travel document has a stamp indicating that you previously crossed the Abkhaz border from the territory of the Russian Federation.

Restrictions in Abkhazia

Despite the restrictions introduced, they are not fully observed. Masks are practically not worn here, and representatives of the tourism industry are already preparing for the upcoming summer season.

  • From February 15, outdoor catering establishments will resume operations.
  • Theaters and museums opened on February 15.
  • Indoor cafes and restaurants have fully resumed operations since February 22.
  • Presumably until March 10, there are still restrictions on the operation of gyms, massage centers, and saunas.
  • Children's centers and other entertainment venues also remain closed.
  • Officially, in Abkhazia there is a mask regime when visiting all public places.

Rules for crossing the border for children under 14 years of age

As of 2021, children under the age of 14 need a foreign passport to travel to Abkhazia. In this case, you will need to present your passport along with your birth certificate at the border. In Russia, a citizen receives an internal passport only upon reaching 14 years of age, therefore, he will not be able to use the above procedure.

Once upon a time it was possible to include a child in a parent’s passport, but these days this practice is hopelessly outdated. Now foreign passports of a new type are in use, with an embedded microchip. Similar documents are issued to all Russian citizens, even newborns, so the sooner you take care of this, the better. If you obtain a foreign passport and present your birth certificate, you will ensure unhindered entry into Abkhazia.

Coming of age on vacation.

Good afternoon Could you please advise on this issue? My wife and child are going on vacation to Crimea and Abkhazia in the summer. Along the route, they will cross the border several times, that is, they will spend part of their vacation in Sochi and Adler, and part in Sukhum and Gagra. The child will turn 14 years old during the trip. That is, he will enter the territory of Abkhazia as a minor, and will leave having already reached the age of majority, and being an adult he will need to re-enter the territory of Abkhazia and leave back within a month. According to the legislation of the Russian Federation, a child must receive a passport within 30 days from reaching the age of 14, and the question arises: according to the birth certificate, will the child be able to cross the border if within 30 days from the date of majority? Or is it better for the child to get a passport?

Good afternoon! I need help from knowledgeable people! We are going on our honeymoon to Abkhazia. Will I have problems crossing the border if I travel with my old passport (with my maiden name) immediately after the wedding? I heard that you need to change your passport, which has a stamp from the registry office about changing your last name, but according to Russian law, it is valid for another month. I just wouldn’t want to put off my vacation for a whole month (while they’re making a new passport). I’m very interested in this question, please, if anyone knows, respond! Maybe someone has already been in a similar situation.. thanks in advance.
