Types of Estonian visas
Types of Estonian visas
Today, there are the following types of visas that can be obtained when visiting Estonia (or another country included in the list of Schengen countries):
- Category “C” visa or short-term visa. The maximum period of a single stay on the territory of a foreign state (Schengen zone) with such a visa is ninety days within one half-year;
At the same time, the countdown of one hundred and eighty days (the validity period of a single short-term Schengen visa) begins anew every time a tourist leaves the territory of a foreign country in which he stayed for less than ninety days.
Helpful advice!
To avoid confusion and correctly calculate the number of days you have the right to stay in Estonia, it is recommended to use an online calculator.
Category “C” visa is suitable for one of the following purposes: tourism, business, education, treatment, visit of relatives.
Despite the “short-term” status, a Schengen visa can be issued for up to five years. However, the most relevant period for which it is issued is half a year. It is for this period that it is much easier to obtain it for those who want to get a visa to Estonia for the first time.
If a visa to Estonia is issued again, and previous trips over the last three years have passed without incident, then the tourist (having the status of an “active tourist”) has the right to apply for an Estonian visa for 12 or 24 months.
- Visa category "D" or long-term visa.
A visa of this category is also called a national visa. Unlike a short-term visa, a visa category “D” allows you to stay on the territory of the Republic of Estonia for a single stay from ninety days to one year;
If the main destination in the Schengen area is Estonia, then, upon receipt of category “D” visas, the tourist has the right to stay in Estonia for up to twelve months. At the same time, in other countries, even with a long-term Estonian visa, a tourist does not have the right to stay for more than ninety days.
When applying for an Estonian visa of this type, the purpose of the trip must be one of the following: work, study, family reunification, long-term treatment, etc.
It is difficult to obtain such a visa and is possible only if you have an impeccable history of previous visits to the Schengen countries over the past three years.
