To visit China, Russian citizens need to obtain a visa, the documents for which must be submitted to the Chinese Embassy in Moscow or consulates in St. Petersburg, Khabarovsk, Vladivostok and Irkutsk. The package of documents is quite extensive; special attention must be paid to ensuring that the papers are folded in a certain order. At the same time, there are plenty of concessions for Russian tourists: to visit Hong Kong and Hainan as part of a tour group for up to 14 and 30 days, respectively, a visa is not required; in Macau and Xijiao International Airport in the border city of Manchuria, it is issued at the border, and in Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Chengdu, Chongqing, Shenyang, Dalian, Guilin, Wuhan, Xi'an, Kunming, Hangzhou, Nanjing and Harbin are allowed visa-free transit.

Self-application of a visa to China

You can obtain a Chinese visa yourself at the embassy in Moscow and consulates located in St. Petersburg, Khabarovsk, Yekaterinburg, Irkutsk and Vladivostok. There is no single visa center that acts as an intermediary between official missions and applicants. Its functions are performed by numerous agencies that can assist in requesting a multiple-entry visa or accept an incomplete package of documents, for which they take their commission.

  1. A foreign passport
    valid for at least 6 months from the end of the trip, with at least one blank page (for a multiple visa - at least 12 months);
  2. Photograph
    A color photo 3.3 x 4.8 cm (see photo requirements below), which must be glued to the application form;
  3. form
    filled out on a computer or by hand in block letters in Russian, English or Chinese, without corrections, erasures or inaccuracies;
  4. Hotel reservation
    Confirmation of hotel reservation for the entire period of stay or an invitation from an organization/individual indicating contacts, signature, official seal;
  5. Medical insurance
    Original and copy of medical insurance for the entire stay;
  6. Copy of tickets
    Provide a printout of electronic tickets;
  7. Group visa
    The concept of “group visa” is used quite often. This is a visa-free list that is issued to persons of 5 or more people who jointly cross the Chinese border at the same time through the same border crossing. The document gives the right to stay in the country for up to 14 days and has a number of restrictions. Its registration is usually carried out by a travel agency (tour operator).

Financial documents such as proof of employment, bank statements and others are not required to be submitted when applying for a Chinese visa. However, they may be requested at the discretion of consular officers.

In exceptional cases, a visa is issued at Beijing airport upon arrival if you provide proof of receipt of an urgent invitation certified by an authorized Chinese authority, or evidence that issuing a visa at a consular office is physically impossible due to lack of time.

In 2021, Chinese authorities introduced mandatory fingerprinting for all travelers aged 14 to 70 during passport control.

  • copy of internal passport (pages with photo and registration);

  • color photo - it must be glued to the application form;
  • a copy and original of insurance with coverage of more than 15 thousand dollars (especially important in St. Petersburg and Moscow). Insure your trip →
  • Make a travel plan just in case.

In the same case, if you received a Chinese visa in the past, you need a copy of it (and a copy of the old passport, if it is pasted there). But when you first receive a visa, it is important to attach proof of financial solvency and a certificate from your work.

Pensioners, the unemployed and students additionally need to provide:

  • letter from the sponsor with a copy of the passport;
  • a certificate from the sponsor’s place of work (indicating his income);
  • or account statement ($100 per day).

For a private visit (acquaintances, friends, etc.) you will need a free-form invitation from the Chinese side, which must be stamped by the police. You also need to have a copy of your Chinese friend's document (ID). However, check with your city's consulate in advance to see if they accept invitations. For individual entrepreneurs, you must attach a copy of the individual entrepreneur certificate.

Visa for children

Children under 18 years of age need to submit a package of documents similar to adults, which additionally includes copies of a birth certificate, consent to leave Russia from the parent/parents, and parents’ general passports. The consular fee for the child is paid in full if he has his own passport.

Consent to travel is issued by the child’s official representatives (parents or guardians). Russian laws allow the removal of a minor from the Russian Federation with one of the parents/guardians and without this document. It is only required if traveling with third parties. However, in China they may ask for a notarized copy of the consent, as well as a copy of the main page of the absent parent's passport when going through border control.

The nuances of obtaining different visas to China

A tourist visa to China is easy to apply for – you just need to provide round-trip tickets and demonstrate a hotel reservation. And of course, a standard package of documents and a completed Form V.2013 application is required.

Applying for a work visa

Those who want to get a job in China will have to try and find an employer who is willing to employ a foreign citizen.

Work visa to China

It is the employer who handles all the necessary documents:

  • issues a work permit,
  • makes an invitation
  • receives the necessary certificates from the Chinese government mechanism.

A potential employee will need a basic standard list of documents, as well as two questionnaires - V2011-A/B. Form V.2011A &V.2011B can be downloaded here.

Among other things, to obtain a work visa you will also need a certificate from a medical examination, for which you need to pass a commission. Of course, only the employer can tell you what kind of commission to go through in each individual case. Then you need to obtain the originals of all documents (from the Chinese employer) and submit the documents to the consulate.

Obtaining a student visa

Those wishing to get an education will need a student visa to China - there is a really large number of different educational programs (by the way, including free ones), a high level of teaching, and the Chinese language is now in demand no less than the commonly used English.

Student visa to China

However, to obtain a study visa, you will need confirmation that a certain educational institution has already enrolled you as one of its students. By the way, if education is paid, you will need to provide information that you paid money for the course. You will need to attach a completed application form to the basic list of documents - in form JW201|202 (depending on the period of study). If the training will take more than six months, a certificate from a medical examination is also required. The application form for a student visa to China can be downloaded here.

Traveling with children

A child visa to China is issued on the basis of a birth certificate (regular internal) and a notarized permission to cross the border. A copy of the document with the details of the accompanying person must be attached to the permit. Among other things, the V2011B form is filled out (information about the child is entered in section C).

Validity and registration dates

A single-entry visa to China is valid for 90 days with the right to stay in the country for 30 days. The double-entry document is valid for six months and allows you to stay in the Middle Kingdom for 30-90 days. A multiple visa does not limit the number of border crossings; it is valid for 1-2 years, with each entry requiring 90 days of legal stay in China.

If you apply directly to the Chinese Consulate, a visa will be issued in 10 days, in rare cases - in 5. Urgent processing takes 2-3 days, express - 24 hours. Intermediary agencies promise to handle the matter in 3–7 business days.

Required documents

To obtain a visa to China for Russians, a certain list of documents is required, which can be supplemented depending on the type of visa.

It should also be taken into account that to obtain a visa permit, you can apply to different consulates, and depending on the mission, the required list of papers may change.

Basic documents for obtaining a visa:

  • An international passport that will be valid for more than six months (blank pages for stamps are required), a photocopy of the spread from the international passport on which personal data is indicated, and a photograph are also required (more on photo requirements below);
  • A photocopy of the general passport of the Russian Federation (according to various sources, either 1–2 pages, or all pages that have any marks on them);
  • A detailed application form on the official form Form V.2013A (with signature). You can fill it out manually, or electronically and print it out;

  • Photocopies of round trip tickets (for air tickets and trains), in case of a bus tour - confirmation from the tour operator;
  • Hotel reservation (you can print the reservation from booking.com), even if it has not been paid, you can always cancel it if necessary;
  • An invitation or a trip plan - you need to indicate dates, stops, and outline the route. If there is an invitation, then attach information about the receiving party;
  • Medical insurance for the entire period of stay in China, the amount of coverage for insured events is not less than $15,000;
  • When visiting China for the first time, a certificate from your place of employment is required - it is advisable that it be on the organization’s letterhead; the certificate must indicate the position, salary and period of work. It is very good if a recommendation from management is attached to this certificate. This will highlight your close connection to your country (which is good for getting a visa).

Visa-free transit to third countries

At the international airports of Shanghai, Hangzhou and Nanjing, visa-free transit is allowed when flying to a third country for up to 144 hours, at the airports of Beijing, Guangzhou, Chongqing, Chengdu, Dalian, Tianjin, Wuhan, Xi'an, Xiamen, Guilin, Kunming, Shenyang, Harbin and Qingdao - up to 72 hours. However, within the first 24 hours the tourist must register with the police. Visa-free transit is allowed for 24 hours at other airports in the country.

The visa-free transit rule does not work if there are two airports in China in a row along the route. You will also have to obtain a tourist visa if the route includes a technical stop in addition to the main transfer at a Chinese transit airport.

From January 1, transit of up to 144 hours will also be allowed at airports in Xiamen, Qingdao, Chengdu, Wuhan and Kunming.

A passenger wishing to take advantage of the right to visa-free transit should notify the airline of his intention 3 days before departure, as its employees must inform the immigration services of the airport of arrival about this in advance.

You must have tickets in hand confirming the onward (but not return) flight, and a visa to the country of destination, if one is required. During this time, it is allowed to leave the airport transit zone (the final decision on the possibility of a person leaving the transit zone is made by a specific airport border service officer). You cannot travel outside the city or move around the country.

Important! Flights through mainland Chinese airports to Hong Kong are subject to visa-free transit. But for a similar transit through the mainland to Hainan - no. Details here: visa-free transits in China with exit from the airport.

Visa-free transit

If the traveler arrives at the international airports of Beijing, Guangzhou, Shanghai, Chengdu, Dalian, Chongqing, Shenyang, Kunming, Xi'an, Guilin, Wuhan, Hangzhou, Harbin, Xiamen and plans to fly within 72 hours to other countries through the same air hubs, then he does not need to first obtain a transit visa to China. In such situations, certain rules must be followed:

  • If a passenger has arrived in the cities of Shanghai, Beijing, Chengdu, Guangzhou or Chongqing, then he is allowed to enter the city, but is prohibited from leaving its boundaries;
  • You cannot transfer to another type of transport (bus, train).

China visa

Sometimes there are flights in which the arrival is at one airport and the departure is from another. In such situations, you can also do without a transit visa, but there are mandatory requirements:

  • The flight is served by one air carrier;
  • The flight is operated by different airlines, but all parts of the flight go under a single booking code and are entered on one form;
  • The airline is scheduled to arrive at one airport for refueling and depart from another.

In this case, a 24-hour transit corridor (exit from the international airport area) may be allowed if the appropriate boarding passes are presented, but the final decision will be made by the visa officer.

Visa-free transit rules also apply to residents of Ukraine (the rule does not apply to Kazakhstan).

Consular fee

Consular fee for individual tourist, commercial and transit visas to China:

  • 3300 RUB for a single entry visa;
  • 6600 RUB for a double-entry visa;
  • 9900 RUB for a multiple visa.

For urgent visa processing within 3-5 days, in addition to the consular fee, 2000 RUB will be charged. For “extra-urgent” consideration (1 day) they charge 4600 RUB. Prices on the page are for September 2021.

The fee is paid by credit card through the POS terminal at the consulate (cash for services is accepted only by the Industrial and Commercial Bank of China organization). The applicant is also charged an additional 2.5% commission, which is not included in the basic tariff.

Visa photo

In 2021, the following photo requirements apply:

Photos that do not meet these requirements are simply not accepted.

China visa on arrival

In some cases, tourists can enter China without a visa, receive it upon arrival directly at the airport by paying a consular fee, or put a stamp in their passport by presenting the necessary documents to a border guard.

This is only relevant for certain regions (Hong Kong, Macau and Hainan) and limited in duration, one-time tourist trips - usually up to 14 or up to 30 days. In addition, it is important to have a package of documents with you and follow all entry rules. More detailed information is provided below.

Transit visa to China for Russians (G)

A transit visa is issued at the embassy if you will stay more than 72 hours in the following cities: Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Chengdu, Chongqin, Dalian, Shenyang, Guilin, Xi'an, Xiamen, Kunming, Harbin. The same is true if the transfer is more than a day in other cities of the country. It is not possible to leave the country by any other means of transport other than by plane. The package of documents is basic (plus a visa to another country).

What documents are needed for transit for 72 hours :

  1. coupons for the previous and next flights;
  2. international passport;
  3. if necessary, a visa to a third country.

Make sure that the tickets are in English (or duplicated). Departure and arrival must be from the same city.

Daily transit with arrival and departure from different airports is possible in the following cases:

  • all flights are operated by one airline;
  • flights are operated by different airlines, but the flight segments are the same and have the same booking code;
  • a transfer or stopover at one of the airports in China is planned by the airline.

What you need for daily transit:

  • international passport;
  • A completed application form;
  • boarding passes from the previous and next flights.

In addition, a transit permit can be obtained directly at the Dalian Zhoushuizi Airport. Duration - 7 days, costs $14. Required documents: photo, valid passport and air tickets to another country. Departure is from the same airport. However, we recommend that you apply for a visa in advance, since there is no guarantee that you will be given one - the decision is made by the officer.

Visa to Hong Kong

Russian citizens do not require a visa to visit the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (SAR) of the People's Republic of China if the period of stay does not exceed 14 days. For a longer period, the entry document must be issued in the general manner.

Although the official instructions of the Hong Kong SAR do not have clear requirements for the validity of a foreign passport, in order to avoid problems at border control, it is better to have a document in hand that is valid for at least 30 days after the end of the trip.

A visa to Hong Kong opens with a “corridor” of 3 months and gives the right to a double visit with the possibility of a 14-day stay at each entry. The required papers are the same as for opening a Chinese visa, the cost is 2000 RUB.

  • Visa to Hong Kong

Visa to Macau

Russian citizens do not require a visa to visit the Macau SAR of China if the period of stay does not exceed 30 days. An entry document for a longer period is issued at the border. The cost of an individual visa is 100 MOP (payment is also accepted in US dollars or Hong Kong dollars in paper notes only). Children under 12 years old do not pay the fee. In some cases, the customs officer will ask to see a hotel reservation, return tickets, or proof of funds. Young unmarried women traveling alone may be denied entry into the border.

Do Russian citizens need a visa to China?

In recent years, there has been a clear rapprochement between the Russian Federation and China in many areas of the economic and political sphere. This factor influences the popularity of travel to this country. More and more Russians are going to the Celestial Empire for employment, health restoration and tourism purposes. A Chinese visa for Russians becomes a pass to a developed country, where you can count on a warm welcome and new opportunities.

According to current legislation, citizens of the Russian Federation must obtain approval from the Consulate to visit the PRC, and the purpose of the visit does not matter. This requirement does not apply to the following situations:

  • The traveler goes to Hong Kong. Today this is a separate zone of China, where you can come without a visa for a period of up to 14 days.
  • Trip to the island Hainan, which is a popular resort among Russians.
  • The destination is Macau, and the period of stay is no more than a month.

In these cases, this means travel to the country, and not transit movement or a trip to a locality bordering the Russian Federation for a short period. These nuances require special study.

In other words, a Russian must apply for a visa to China, taking into account all current rules. Consulate employees decide whether to issue it or refuse it. The issue is considered for each case individually. It is important to collect and prepare documentation in advance. To resolve the issue, you can contact a Chinese visa center or complete all the steps yourself.

Visa to Hainan

At Sanya and Haikou airports, citizens of Russia and a number of other countries arriving on direct flights can obtain a visa on arrival. It gives the right to travel outside the island and travel around mainland China. To obtain the document, you must present a passport with a validity period of at least 6 months, one color photograph of passport size and pay a visa fee of 400 CNY. In rare cases, border guards require to show return tickets and/or confirmation of hotel reservations. The validity period of such a visa is 15-30 days.

For citizens of the Russian Federation who have booked a tour through agencies cooperating with Chinese tour operators, visa-free entry to Hainan Island has been established for a stay of up to 30 days. Passport control at Sanya Airport is carried out according to visa-free lists, which can even consist of one person. The receiving party submits the data to the border in advance.

Categories of visas for entry into China and their characteristics

Getting a visa to China is not as difficult as it might seem at first glance. Moreover, depending on the nature of the trip, its duration and specifics, there are the following types of visas to China:

  • Category C visa is intended for business trips. It is issued to crew members working on various types of vehicles such as ships, railway trains, international airlines or road transport. The visa also applies to their family members who accompany the crew members during the trip.
  • A category D visa is issued when a person wants to enter the territory of the PRC for permanent residence. The foreigner personally submits an application for a type of permit to the immigration department located at the security department of the district in which he plans to settle.
  • The F visa is intended for students entering the country for the purpose of exchange, scientific activities, internship or practical training. A prerequisite for obtaining such an entry permit is the provision of an invitation letter from an educational institution or other organization located within the country.
  • A G visa is issued to persons transiting through Chinese territory to another state. It is issued regardless of the type of transport connection for all adults who cross the border.
  • J1 and J2 visas are issued to foreign journalists accredited and working within China. In this case, depending on the period of stay in the state, type J2 (up to 180 days) and J1 (more than 180 days) permits are issued. Obtaining the appropriate visa is only possible if you have the necessary permits and certificates issued by the competent government agencies.
  • A category L visa implies entry into the territory of the PRC for the purpose of tourism or other types of recreation. It can be group (company of more than 5 people) or individual, when a person plans to tour independently. The procedure for obtaining it is the simplest compared to other types of visa permits.

    China visa category L

  • The M visa category is suitable for persons entering the country to establish business contacts or mutually beneficial economic cooperation. The purpose of the trip may also be the signing of contracts, business negotiations or participation in exhibitions.
  • Visa categories Q1 and Q2 are issued to foreigners to visit relatives living in China. When applying for it, the length of stay within the country is the determining factor. Persons planning to stay with relatives for up to 180 days are issued a Q2 visa, and those who want to extend their visit are required to obtain a Q1 category permit.
  • The R visa category is issued to citizens with high professional achievements or unique scientific knowledge. It is being drawn up on the initiative of the Chinese government, which is interested in the visit of the above-mentioned persons.
  • Visa categories S1 and S2 are provided to citizens of other countries who enter the territory of the state to visit foreign relatives studying or officially employed within its borders. They are also issued to persons making personal trips for a period of more than (S1) or less than (S2) 180 days.
  • Visa categories X1 and X2 are required for foreign citizens crossing the border of the PRC for admission to a university, internship or industrial practice for a period of more than (X1) and less than (X2) 180 days. To obtain such a permit, you must provide an invitation from the host party located and registered within the state.

    Study visa to China category X1

  • The Z category visa is a work visa and is suitable for all persons traveling to China for the purpose of employment. It is issued if there is a special permission that is provided to the immigration service by authorized government agencies.

The above categories of visas to China cover almost all possible purposes and types of trips for which citizens of other countries cross the state border.

Most foreigners enter on tourist or work visas; they account for about 80% of the flow of immigrants. At the same time, the list of documents required to obtain an entry permit may vary depending on the purpose of the trip and its focus.

To visit China, Russians do not need a visa in cases where travelers are in transit to third countries and plan to spend no more than 144 hours in China. Moreover, the transfer point can be the following cities: Xiamen, Qingdao, Chengdu, Wuhan, Kunming, Beijing, Tianjin, Dalian, Hangzhou, Nanjing, Shanghai, Qinhuangdao, Shijiazhuan and Shenyang.

Visa to Tibet

A Chinese visa is required to travel to Tibet. In addition, visiting is only possible with an official permit from the authorities (Tibet Entry Permit), which is issued by the Tibet Tourism Bureau-TTB. The permit can be obtained by both individual travelers and groups.

To visit the western regions of Tibet, you need another permit - Aliens Travel Permit. It is obtained in Lhasa.

The “permit” is not sold separately, but is issued only when purchasing a tour, which can be taken directly from the bureau’s branches in China (in the cities of Beijing, Chengdu, Xi’an, Shanghai, Xining and Hong Kong) or in Nepal (you will also need to obtain a Chinese visa at the Chinese Consulate in Kathmandu). But most often, tours are purchased from TTB-accredited travel companies in these countries. TTB has representative offices in Japan and the USA. A permit can be ordered when purchasing a tour through Russian operators specializing in this area.

It is strongly recommended to submit your application 20-25 days before your planned trip.

To obtain a permit you must provide:

  • a copy of a valid China visa;
  • a copy of the main page of the passport.

Traveling into Tibet without permission is prohibited. Without it, neither plane nor bus tickets to the Autonomous Region will be sold. There is also a high risk of being detained by police at any of the roadblocks.

Urgent visa to China

There is no such category as an urgent visa to China at the Consulate. The only thing that can be done is to speed up the process of studying the application and making a decision (if there is a need for this). Expedited processing is necessary for travelers who are planning to fly to another country in the near future. The service is provided after double payment has been made.

With express registration, the Consulate promises an urgent visa to China in 1 day in Moscow. The cost of such a service is the basic fee “plus” an additional 4,600 rubles. If there is no such emergency, you can order a permit using an urgent procedure. In this case, documents are issued within two to three days, and the additional payment is 2000 rubles.

If you urgently need a visa to China, you must notify the Consulate staff in advance and prepare for additional costs. At the same time, self-submission of documentation does not affect the speed of consideration of the application.

Visa to Taiwan

It is worth remembering that Taiwan is a partially recognized state and you will need a separate Taiwan visa to visit the island. Entry with a Chinese visa is not possible, and vice versa. However, from August 1, 2021 to July 30, 2021, tourists from Russia will not need a visa if their stay on the island does not exceed 21 days.

Visas to Taiwan are available for 30, 60 and 90 days. Foreigners with 60- or 90-day visas can extend their stay on the island. To do this, you must contact the service point of the National Immigration Agency at your place of residence in Taiwan and provide documents and an application.
