Profession confirmation
Receiving a job offer is a requirement for most work visas. But not the only thing. One of the important steps is to confirm your qualifications.
To determine your qualifications, you need to use the national qualifications framework (New Zealand Qualifications Framework - NZQF), according to which they are all ranked from 0 to 10. For example, a bachelor's degree is a 7. It is sometimes difficult to apply the New Zealand system to foreign qualifications. There is a list of qualifications obtained in Russia that are exempt from expert assessment: it contains a list of “correct” Russian universities and a New Zealand assessment of the diplomas they issue. If the university or diploma name is not listed, the qualifications must be confirmed by the New Zealand Qualifications Authority (NZQA).
Two situations may arise here. If a person is applying for a Skilled Migrant visa, he will first fill out an “Expression of Interest”, within which he must request a Pre-Assessment Result (PAR). This service costs NZ$138 (approximately US$90). If the expression of interest has been accepted and the person continues with the immigration process, or if the applicant immediately applies for a residence visa, then the applicant must apply for a full International Qualifications Assessment (IQA) from NZQF. And it already costs NZ $746 (almost $500).
Representatives of some professions in New Zealand are required to register with the state. These are mostly doctors, but the list also includes lawyers, teachers, and people who work with electricity. It is better to register before arriving in New Zealand. And when applying for a work visa, this requirement is completely mandatory.
Finding a job in New Zealand is quite possible. Don't be fooled - this is a long process. Which is especially difficult for those who have not studied in this country and have no experience working there. Nevertheless, many of our compatriots (and not only “IT specialists”) moved to the islands and managed to find work there.

Minimum wage: $11 per hour
I came to a new agency, which offered me a job at a confectionery factory. This was the second job where I was paid the minimum wage - at that time it was $11.07 per hour (editor's note: at the time of writing, the minimum wage in New Zealand is $11.87 per hour).
I worked 60 hours a week - five days with 12-hour shifts, and we began to break even. I worked on this schedule for four or five months, and the agent offered me exactly the same job, but at a different factory - a dairy, where they already paid $14.09 an hour.
I worked with the agency in this new place for a couple of months, management noticed me and offered to work for them without the agency. This, of course, is a plus, since they raised my rate by another $1.34 per hour (ed. note: a total of $15.43 per hour), they began to pay for overtime and pay extra for going out on holidays. There are no such advantages when working through an agency.

Job search: for the employer you are a person without a background
Working in New Zealand is a different story. I’ll say right away: for a New Zealand employer, any visitor to the country is a blank sheet of paper. It doesn’t matter what merits you had in your homeland, here you are just a person without a background and recommendations (not again, but again), which are mandatory in any business and any field!
All this year only I worked, since Andrey did not have enough time for it. It was very, very difficult for me to find a job. The main problem is that at the time of my arrival, my command of English was far from perfect. Therefore, I could not find a job for two months.
At first I wore rose-colored glasses. I understood what I was worth: I have extensive experience in the administrative field, because in Ukraine, before I took up photography, I worked as an administrator in the city council. I looked for similar vacancies here, sent my resume, and waited.
I waited for two months, and during this time there was not a single answer at all! They didn’t even send negative answers. Silence, as if you are shouting into the void, writing.
A little later, I started going to agencies: I knocked on the door, approached the managers and said: “I am such and such, I worked there, I can do this.” So I started to get at least some answers - it’s harder for people to remain silent when they’re talking to you face to face, especially here in New Zealand. In general, one agency invited me for an interview and gave me a test task to take home in Word, Excel, and typing speed. My work was accepted, but at the interview I fell apart - my English let me down terribly, and I was worried, of course. I myself realized that they wouldn’t take me anywhere, and I wouldn’t be able to communicate with people or advise them competently. The administrator is the face of the company, its voice, communication style, and confidence. What about me? I look into the eyes of the interviewer and see in her eyes: “Everything is great, you’re great, but English...” This, of course, no one says - everyone is positive, tolerant, even too much.

Work and quarantine
Right when we arrived, there were a lot of tourists here and, accordingly, there was plenty of work. Then the pandemic happened and everyone was quarantined.
The first month we stayed at home. You could walk down the street, but you couldn’t gather in groups and travel outside your locality unless absolutely necessary. Then establishments slowly began to open, but it was still necessary to maintain distance. We gradually reached a zero level of restrictions - now everything is free in the country, only the borders are still closed.
While we were in quarantine, the state paid subsidies to the employer for us (for 30 hours of work per week) so that he would not fire us. After taxes and rent, that was $406 (approximately $266) per week.
After quarantine, our original contract was canceled, but Logan offered us another one - for two months as ordinary assistants (cleaning rooms, painting the house - in general, we do whatever is needed). Payment is by the hour and depends on the weather: if it rains, then there is no opportunity to do anything outside.
But even despite all these difficulties, we have already made good money here. In six months we have already bought a laptop and a car.
