Biometric passport

Biometric passportBiometric international passport
This type of document differs from the old type in the presence of a special information carrier. It contains a plastic page on which information about the passport holder is printed, and a chip - this contains the same information, the date of issue of the passport and so on.

Also, specific data can be recorded on this medium. Such as a scan of the owner’s fingerprint and his iris. This helps to accurately identify a citizen if necessary.

The fact that the ID has an electronic medium inside can be seen immediately from the first page of the cover - a special icon is applied to it.

Briefly about the old model

So, how long is a passport valid for? Let's start with an old-style document.

In this case, the passport does not have any biometric data of the person. It is somewhat reminiscent of a civilian ID card. In such a document you can enter data about minor children under 14 years of age. It is very comfortable.

An old-style international passport is valid for only 5 years. After the end of this period, you will have to completely redo the document. It is not possible to extend it.

Where can I get a passport

In order to obtain a foreign passport, you need to visit a branch of the Federal Migration Service. It is important to remember that travel agencies do not have the right to draw up the relevant document; they can only help with filling out the application if you are not confident in your abilities.

All documents are issued on a first-come, first-served basis, so you need to choose your time carefully. It is best to take care of obtaining a passport in advance and visit the office during the off-season for vacations.

Validity periods of foreign passports

The maximum validity of a foreign passport today is 10 years (for a biometric passport), the minimum is 5 years (for an old-style foreign passport).

When choosing the type of travel document, you should take into account the number of pages for affixing visas. The old passport has 36 pages, the new one has 10 more pages – 46.

Deadlines relevant for different countries

When planning a vacation to one of the foreign countries, be sure to check out the website of its embassy. As a rule, they require that there be from 6 to 12 months left until the end date:

  • 3 months;
  • 90 days;
  • 91 days;
  • 6 months;
  • 105 days.

It is important to compare these deadlines with the data of your foreign passport. You need to calculate so that the required period of validity of the document remains not before the trip, but after your return to your homeland (this is what most embassies require). Please consider this carefully.

Since refusals due to non-compliance with this rule are quite common in 2021.

international passport
There are also states for which deadlines are not of fundamental importance. For example, you can enter Australia using any valid passport. The main thing for the country is that you are identified. The same rule applies in some other countries.

For most countries, it is important that your passport does not expire immediately after your trip. For example, 90 days are relevant for Belgium, Andorra, Austria, Germany, Hungary, Greece, Cyprus, Italy, Spain and many other countries. Brazil, Argentina, India, Indonesia will require you to have a 6-month passport validity.

Purchasing air tickets

Please note that to enter Israel and some other countries, it is necessary that the validity period of the international passport is counted not at the time of return to your homeland, but from the date of the intended trip abroad.

The UK stands out from others by requiring that the passport be valid for another 6 months from the date of application for a visa.

There is also a list of states, which includes those countries that work with Russia in a visa-free regime.

What does a new international passport look like?

A new generation international passport is a small book of 46 pages containing an electronic chip. This chip contains the following information: a digitized image of the face and signature, information about the internal passport and the owner’s index fingerprints.

The main differences between the new biometric passport and the old one

  1. The text on the cover “Russian Federation” and “passport”: in the previous version they were written in Russian, in the new version - Russian and English.
  2. The picture on the cover confirms the presence of the chip.
  3. Electronic information chip (available only in new samples).
  4. Plastic first page (a chip with information is built into it).
  5. The passport photo with the chip is applied with a laser, rather than pasted in.
  6. The new sample documents do not include a record of children (the child must have his own ID).
  7. The new passport has 46 pages (the old one has 32 pages).

Production time

As you know, OPP is a foreign passport (general civil) containing a significant amount of information; this document must be certified by all responsible persons and produced with truly high quality. Therefore, you will not be able to receive it the next day. Please be patient, because passports (both old and biometric) in most cases are produced for:

  • month - if you applied at your place of registration;
  • 4 months - if you are applying for a passport in a locality you are visiting temporarily;
  • no more than 3 months - if the citizen knows a state secret or other particularly important information.

Of course, sometimes a passport can be produced in 3 days, but there must be very good reasons for this, such as the need for urgent medical care, the death of a close relative, and the like.

In some cases, there are other factors that determine how long it takes to obtain a foreign passport.
