The Kingdom of the Netherlands surprises visitors with the incomprehensible freedom and hard work of its citizens. In a tiny country by Russian standards, windmills are everywhere, helping to pump out water and preserve lands reclaimed from the sea. The Dutch grow so many tulips and other plants there that they sell millions of flowers at auction for export around the world.
In addition to windmills, fields of colorful tulips and huge greenhouses, the Netherlands offers guests:
- original architecture and 1500 bridges of Amsterdam;
- collections of works by Rembrandt and Van Gogh;
- diamonds in the museum and numerous shops;
- red light district and erotic museum;
- cheese market in Alkmaar;
- a cannabis museum and coffee shops where soft drugs are sold legally.
The Netherlands is a member of the European Union.
Despite the fact that almost everything is allowed in the kingdom, it is absolutely safe here. The crime rate is so low that empty prisons are planned to be rented out.
A high level of freedom combined with security attracts young people to the country. Here you can study and work.
The Kingdom of the Netherlands is not only a country near the North Sea, but also several islands in the Caribbean Sea. They offer guests an exotic holiday.
Main types of visas
The Kingdom is part of Schengen, so for a short visit (up to 90 days per six months) you need a Schengen visa to the Netherlands type C. It is valid in the European part of the Kingdom and in other EU countries.
Since Amsterdam Airport is often used by Russians for transit flights to the United States and other countries, their passengers will need a transit visa. It is not needed if the final destination is another Schengen country for which a visa is issued.
Staying in the Netherlands for more than 90 days is permitted with a long stay visa. It is also called MVV (temporary residence permit). It is issued for a period of up to 3 months for multiple use after the Immigration and Naturalization Service approves the applicant's candidacy.
To visit the islands in the Caribbean (Aruba, Bonaire, Saba, Sint Maarten, Curacao, St. Eustatius) you need to request a special Caribbean visa. Short-term is issued for a period of up to a month. It will not be needed if you have a Schengen multiple visa. The Caribbean visa does not apply to the European part of the Netherlands.
Anyone who has applied for a short-term Caribbean visa at least 2 times in 5 years, who needs medical treatment on the islands, sails or works in the maritime industry, can apply for a visa under the Caribbean Carpet program. It is issued for a period of one to four years.
You can spend more than 90 days in the Caribbean part of the kingdom only if you have a residence permit. Interestingly, even Dutch citizens must apply for it if they intend to live on the islands for more than 180 days.

Via the consulate
You can apply for a Dutch visa at the Royal Embassy (Moscow) or the Consulate General (St. Petersburg). At the same time, applicants for short-term visas are accepted only by appointment and have a printed confirmation sent by email. On the appointed day, you must show up with a ready-made package of documents, submit biometrics, and pay the consular fee.
The Consulate General in St. Petersburg, regardless of individual or collective visa applications, does not accept sailors and pilots. These categories of applicants need to contact the visa center.

Amsterdam, Netherlands
HOW TO APPLY FOR A VISA
To enter the Netherlands and/or other Schengen countries, all citizens of Russia and the CIS countries must obtain a visa.
Before applying for it, make sure you have a clear understanding of the purpose of the visit. A Schengen visa must be obtained from the relevant embassy/consulate of the country that is the main purpose of the trip. The main destination country will be the Schengen country where the duration of your stay exceeds the duration of stay in other countries. In this regard, in case of travel to more than one Schengen country, an application should be submitted to the embassy/consulate representing the country of primary destination. If the length of stay is the same, you should contact the embassy/consulate of the country you will be entering first. We can offer you assistance throughout the visa application process, but we are not authorized to advise or guide you in choosing a visa category. Since the work of the visa center is primarily administrative in nature, we cannot say whether you will be given a visa or how long it will take to process your visa application. These issues and decisions on them are entirely the prerogative of the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands.
The Netherlands Visa Application Center accepts short stay visa applications by appointment .
You can sign up to submit documents here.
From 14 September 2015, all applicants over 12 years of age must submit biometric data. Netherlands visa applicants are required to submit 10 fingerprints and a photograph. Biometric data will be stored in the Visa Information System (VIS), which is an information technology system that allows Schengen member states to exchange visa data. The main task of VIS is to simplify visa processing and control at external borders, as well as increase the level of security.
From 14 September 2015, the applicant must appear for the initial fingerprinting at the Netherlands Visa Application Centre. Subsequent visa applications within 59 months may be submitted without the applicant appearing in person.
ATTENTION! IMPORTANT!
The Dutch Embassy is authorized to call applicants to the Visa Application Center to retake biometrics in cases where it is discovered that the biometric data is not appearing properly in the EU VIS system.
This is done so that the applicant does not have problems crossing the border.
We strongly recommend that all applicants submit biometric data when submitting documents, even if this procedure was completed during a previous visit to the visa center.
Please read the rules for submitting documents in Moscow and other regions:
To apply for a visa, the applicant must be present in person.
However, if the applicant has submitted biometric data for a Schengen visa in the previous 59 months, the application may be submitted by a third party.
Attention: to submit documents by a third party for minor applicants, a notarized power of attorney from both parents is required.
We also ask you to pay attention to the fact that the visa application is a mandatory document for submitting documents. This form must be signed by the applicant personally, or by the applicant's parents in the case of filing documents for a minor.

Visa documents for children
Dutch diplomats require a signed special consent form if a minor travels to the kingdom without parents or guardians. You also need to have it with you during your trip, as Dutch border guards have the right to request it. The consent form does not replace a notarized permission for the departure of a minor, which is also mandatory.
A child traveling without parents must have his own passport. Copies of the main pages of the parents’ internal passports must be added to his package of documents.
Additional documents for different types of visas
It is recommended to provide the following documents confirming the purpose of the trip:

How long does it take to get a visa to the Netherlands?
For Schengen, the Dutch Embassy recommends submitting documents no later than 15 days (excluding delivery from the regions). This time is usually enough for visa officers to make a decision. In some cases, the visa may be extended up to 30, less often up to 60 days. It is impossible to predict how thoroughly the documents of a particular person will be checked. So it’s better to apply for permission to enter the kingdom in advance. The maximum period allowed is 3 months before the trip.
