Obtaining a visa to Jordan on your own

In this article, I tried to collect and compile as much as possible the information I have studied and obtained experimentally, relevant for 2021, about Jordanian visa rules. Do Russians, Belarusians, Ukrainians and citizens of other CIS countries need a visa to Jordan? How to travel to Jordan without a visa? How to buy and use a single Jordan Pass? We will consider all these issues in detail in this publication.

In fact, the topic is very controversial, it is discussed on several threads of the Vinsky forum, so in order to collect everything “to the heap”, you need to sift through a ton of both outdated and recent information. We had to learn a lot experimentally from our own experience when we crossed the border crossing from Eilat to Aqaba without a visa in January 2021. I’ll immediately make a reservation that I did not find complete and reliable answers to questions about visiting Jordan from Syria, Iraq and Saudi Arabia; the article focuses on the land borders with Israel and the country’s international airports.

Do Russians, Belarusians, and Ukrainians need a visa to Jordan?

To holiday in Jordan, Russians, Belarusians and Ukrainians need a tourist visa **.

Excerpt from Timatik about whether a visa is needed for Jordan

**However, for citizens of Russia, Belarus, Ukraine, Kazakhstan and many others, you can travel to Jordan without a visa , subject to certain conditions, which we will discuss in more detail below.

Passport requirements. To visit Jordan you will need a passport (for Russians and Ukrainians - a foreign passport), valid for at least another 6 months after the expiration of the intended stay.

How to get a visa to Jordan

There are at least 2 ways to obtain a visa to Jordan:

  • Obtain in advance from the Consulate (Embassy).
  • Apply for a visa on arrival.

Ukrainians, Belarusians, Russians, citizens of Kazakhstan and other countries of the former CIS (except the Republic of Moldova) can visit Jordan without a visa in the following cases:

  • When traveling accompanied by a licensed guide and fulfilling certain conditions.
  • Upon presentation of a special single Jordan Pass ticket.
  • Upon arrival at the airport or sailing to the port of Aqaba, if leaving the country through the same points (ASEZA free economic zone). You can also enter Jordan without a visa through the land crossing with Israel at the Wadi Arava checkpoint (Eilat Aqaba), but on condition that the tourist spends more than 2 nights in the country.

We will consider each method in more detail below.

How much does a visa to Jordan cost?

The cost of a visa to Jordan is the same for Russians, Belarusians and Ukrainians. The price depends on the method of receipt and the duration of travel to the country:

  • Visa at the Consulate - $67 (single entry) - the data is not 100%, since the mystical Embassy of the Kingdom of Jordan in Moscow does not have an official website, and the email and phone numbers obtained on the Internet do not respond.
  • Visa on arrival - 40 JOD ($57, single entry). On the Vinsky forum there is information that starting from 2021, at the Sheikh Hussein crossing from Israel, with an expected stay in Jordan of more than 3 days, a visa for tourists will cost 10 JOD ($14).

Applying for a visa on the territory of the Russian Federation

If a foreign passport is valid for less than six months, then a visa must be obtained in Russia. The embassy is located in Moscow at Mamonovsky Lane, building 3. The necessary information can be obtained by calling (495) 699-1242, 699-2845, 699-4344, 699-9564, 699-6717.

Visas for tourists are issued as single, double or multiple entry. Its cost is about $30 for a single entry, about $50 for a double entry and 90 conventional units for a multiple entry. This document is completed fairly quickly - within two or three days.

Single and double entry visas are valid for three months after receipt and allow you to stay in the Kingdom of Jordan for a month. Multiple-entry permits are issued for six months.

To obtain a visa, you will need to collect a package of documents, including passports (domestic and foreign), a completed application form, two photographs of the established sample, medical insurance, confirmation of a hotel room booked and air tickets.

Requirements for tourists visiting Jordan

In addition to visa problems, when visiting Jordan, a tourist must comply with additional requirements :

  • The passport must not expire earlier than 6 months.
  • The border service may refuse entry into the country if you do not have a return ticket.

Factors that do not affect entry into the Kingdom of Jordan:

  • An Israeli entry stamp in your passport does not have a negative impact on your ability to visit Jordan.
  • It is not necessary to take out insurance for Jordan, but for your own safety, it is still advisable to purchase a policy.

Where can I get a visa on arrival in Jordan?

You can get a Jordan tourist visa on arrival:

  • At Queen Alia International Airport in Amman.
  • At the northern land crossing from Israel (Nahar Yarden/Sheikh Hussein).

At the Allenby Bridge/King Hussein Bridge land crossing (Jericho - Amman) from the Israeli (Palestinian Territory) side, a visa on arrival cannot be obtained.

As for the land borders with Syria, both of them seem to be closed due to the civil war. The situation with Iraq is also not the most favorable; what is the condition of the only border checkpoint, and whether it is possible to obtain a visa at the border there is anyone’s guess. When crossing with Saudi Arabia, obtaining a visa on arrival should not be a problem.

Classification of Jordan visas

The type of entry permit requested must be entirely consistent with the reason for visiting the country. Visas can be immigrant or non-immigrant. The former provide the opportunity for further legalization in the Kingdom, the latter are designed only for a more or less long stay. Visas can also be:

  • one-time;
  • double;
  • multiple, without limiting the number of crossings of the Jordanian state border.

Permits for transit passengers

Amman International Airport is a fairly large transport hub. Regardless of citizenship, a passenger who plans to spend no more than two days there will not need any visa. But only if the next flight is also from Queen Alia Airport. If you plan to move to another point of departure, you will need to obtain a transit visa. It costs $57 and is valid for three days.

The name of the state comes from the main river of the country - the biblical Jordan and the ruling Arab monarchical dynasty of the Hashemites. Its representatives have ruled the state for hundreds of years. The King of Morocco also belongs to this dynasty.

Visit Jordan

Back in Soviet times, many highly qualified specialists left for Jordan, because the USSR tried to expand its political and economic influence in the countries of the Middle East. After the collapse of the Soviet Union, many of them remained to live in the Kingdom, becoming its residents or citizens. Also, a large number of Jordanian students studied at Soviet universities. During their stay in the CIS, many married Russian, Ukrainian, and Belarusian women and went with them to their sunny homeland.

The hot Jordanian soil has become a new homeland for many immigrants from the USSR and post-Soviet countries

To obtain a visitor visa to Jordan, you will need an invitation from a private individual. All concerns regarding its preparation fall on the shoulders of the Jordanian side; the document itself must be certified by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Kingdom. It should indicate information about the purpose of the guest’s visit, length of stay, and also confirm your readiness to support him financially in case of unforeseen circumstances. The completed invitation is sent to the address of the invited person or to the Jordanian diplomatic mission. Based on this document, a visitor visa is issued, which is initially valid for three months. It can be extended up to six months, but only once.

The Kingdom of Jordan neighbors Israel. For a long period it was involved in the Arab-Israeli conflict, but did not take an openly hostile position towards its neighbor. Therefore, the presence of an Israeli visa or a stamp on visiting Israel in your foreign passport will not affect the possibility of obtaining a visa to the Kingdom of Jordan. His authorities are quite loyal, unlike other Arab colleagues. Some of them have officially banned foreigners who have been to Israel from visiting their countries.

We are going to Jordan to work

Those citizens who travel to work in Jordan will need a work visa. All efforts when issuing an invitation fall on the shoulders of the Jordanian employer, with whom a contract must be signed. He applies to the country's Ministry of Labor with a statement in which he asks for permission to hire a foreign specialist. Next, the employer needs to make an invitation. It is issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Kingdom. After receiving a positive verdict from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, an invitation and a work contract are sent to the future employee. With these documents, he applies to the Jordanian diplomatic mission in his country. The initial validity period of such a permit is one year, then it can be extended on the basis of a prolonged employment relationship.

In Jordan, specialists in the field of tourism, financial services, as well as highly qualified oil workers will be able to find work relatively easily. After all, the country has large oil reserves, and its exports account for the lion's share of budget revenues. Pay in Jordan, of course, is not comparable to European standards, but sometimes approaches its standards, especially when it comes to the oil and gas industry. Representatives of medical specialties of all skill levels are also in demand in the country.

What international students will need

Those who want to seriously study the Arabic language and join the Arab culture come to Jordan. To obtain a visa, you will need a statement from the administration of a higher educational institution, where the student’s enrollment in the number of students is confirmed . A student visa can be immediately issued for 12 months. To extend it, an application from the university administration will be required. The visa permit is extended until the completion of the entire course of study.

The advantage of studying at universities in Jordan is its relative cheapness and the prospect of staying and working in the Middle East. Specialists who speak Arabic well and have a diploma from a relevant university are worth their weight in gold everywhere. There are also several well-known educational institutions in the country that train Muslim clerics. Their completion not only opens up the possibility of serving in the Arab East, but is also considered very prestigious in the Islamic world.

Graduation from a Jordanian theological educational institution will provide an opportunity to serve in the Arab East

Business visa

Jordan is attractive for foreign businesses not only because of its favorable tax legislation, but also because of its geographical location. You can get a business visa if you have registered your own enterprise in the Kingdom, acquired part of the business, or have a permanent business partner in Jordan. The basis for opening a visa is an invitation from a commercial or government entity, confirmation of registration of your own company in this country or purchase of a share in a business.

A business visa can be opened both on the territory of the Kingdom itself and at a diplomatic mission in another state. Its validity period is limited to one year. Further, it can be extended, but only if there is a conclusion from the Jordanian authorities about the effectiveness and legality of the existing business.

Jordanians are born traders, so it's worth bargaining everywhere. And not only at the market, but even in the supermarket, which is extremely surprising for a guest from the CIS. Sometimes, as a result of bargaining, the price is reduced by three times.

Permission for investors

Jordan's economy is developing largely due to the influx of foreign investment, for which the government has created a comfortable investment climate. Most funds are required in the oil and gas industry, infrastructure development, tourism business, and financing government bonds. To participate in the program, an investment of at least half a million dollars will be required, providing for the placement of funds for at least three years.

After the application is approved by the Government of the Kingdom, an invitation is issued for the foreign investor, on the basis of which a visa is issued. Its validity period will initially be one year, followed by an extension for another two. After this, the foreign investor can become a resident of the Kingdom. He also has the right to invite his family to join him immediately after receiving an investor visa.

Marry a Jordanian

If you marry a citizen of Abdullah II, you can get a special type of visa. In this case, it is necessary that the marriage be registered according to the laws of the Kingdom. If the official ceremony took place outside of Jordan, then legalization of the marriage certificate will be required. A visa for foreign spouses is issued for a period of six months, after which you can apply for a residence permit. Marriage to a citizen of Jordan implies obtaining citizenship of this country after three years of legal residence and stay in an official marriage union.

The majority of the local population professes Islam, so it is not recommended to offend the feelings of believers. It is very important not to violate local rules, especially in relation to women. Drinking alcohol, especially in public, is also not encouraged and can lead to conflict with the local police.

Scientific visa

Jordan is attractive to historians, archaeologists, and ethnographers. You can obtain a scientific visa at the invitation of a Jordanian organization or upon confirmation of participation in an international program. The first time a visa is issued for three months, after which it can be extended up to a year. If in the future there is a need to continue work in the country, then a foreign scientist can extend his visa for another year.

The Temple of Petra is an amazing creation of human hands

Visit to the Aqaba Special Zone

Aqaba is a special economic zone and Jordan's largest resort on the Red Sea. If foreigners plan to pay a visit there for no longer than a month, then they also receive a visa, but it is issued free of charge. The possibility of obtaining it exists only in case of visiting the zone for the purpose of tourism or a short visit through the seaport of Aqaba or the international airport "Hakl", located near the city.

In fact, more than half of the foreigners coming to Jordan are located in the Aqaba area. It is interesting for business representatives and attractive for foreign tourists, especially for its clean beaches and very affordable prices for vacationers. Many guests from neighboring Israel move to Aqaba to relax for a few days, because it is much cheaper.

Aqaba is Jordan's only port and resort on the Red Sea.

Features of crossing the border through the Arava border point

Almost next to Aqaba is the large Israeli city and resort of Eilat. There is a special border crossing in this area on the Israeli-Jordanian border. Since 2021, the rules for its use by foreign citizens have become somewhat stricter. In particular, it is now possible to cross the border only as part of an organized group, and information about future guests of Jordan must be transmitted to the checkpoint no later than two days before crossing the border.

You can obtain a Jordanian visa at the border crossing, just as you can upon arrival at the international airport. But in this case, in addition to the standard visa fee, you will have to pay another 28 US dollars in the form of an additional ASEZA fee. Aqaba Special Economic Zone Authority - this is the decoding of this abbreviation. It means that we are talking about the management of the Aqaba Special Economic Zone. It is expected that the proceeds will be used for its maintenance and infrastructure development. If a traveler officially declares at the border that he is traveling to Jordan to visit the ancient temple of Petra, then he is exempt from paying this fee.

The Arava border crossing requires special border crossing rules

Free through ASEZA SEZ

If you cross the border in the Kingdom in the ASEZA free economic zone (south of the country), then you do not need a visa to Jordan for up to 30 days. These are: Aqaba International Airport, Aqaba Port (a ferry arrives here from the Egyptian city of Nuweiba), the land border with Saudi Arabia at the Red Sea and the Eilat-Aqaba land checkpoint. There are several reservations: departure must also be carried out through the same border points of the ASEZA FEZ. If you have not visited Petra, you will need to pay an ASEZA exit fee of 20 JOD.

This is the current situation for the Yitzhak Rabin/Wadi Arava checkpoint. From January 1, 2021, the receipt of any visa on arrival at the Yitzhak Rabin / Arava crossing (Eilat - Aqaba) was first cancelled, but in September they came to their senses and made amendments. Now, to get to Jordan from Israel through this checkpoint without a visa, you need to spend more than 2 nights in the Kingdom. When leaving the country, the following situations may arise:

  • Spent 3 nights in Jordan and visited Petra - don't pay anything.
  • Spent 3 nights in Jordan and did not visit Petra - pay ASEZA exit fee 20 JOD ($28).
  • Spent 2 nights in Jordan and visited Petra - only pay a departure fee of 10 JOD ($14).
  • Spent 2 nights in Jordan and did not visit Petra - pay the standard departure fee of 10 JOD ($14) and the ASEZA departure fee of 20 JOD ($28).
  • Spent less than 2 nights in Jordan and visit Petra - pay a visa fee of 40 JOD ($56) and an exit fee of 10 JOD ($14).
  • Spent less than 2 nights in Jordan and did not visit Petra - pay a visa fee of 40 JOD ($56), a standard exit fee of 10 JOD ($14) and an ASEZA exit fee of 20 JOD ($28).

Nuances of visiting the country

Do Belarusians need a visa to Jordan?

Whether a visa is needed for Jordan is not the only question that may concern a traveler. One of the recent innovations was a restriction for women. Now, in order to enter the kingdom, you need to have a return ticket or documents confirming your marriage to a Jordanian citizen.

For some time, Jordan issued free visas to tourists who arrive in Aqaba by sea or air and have a return ticket from the same area, no later than the 30th day of their stay. But at the moment it's more luck than rule. Border guards may indeed give you a free visa, or they may refuse it and demand a standard fee. It is not recommended to argue - in the end you may get a free visa, but before that you will get pretty nervous.

If you are on vacation in Egypt and want to visit Jordan, then do not expect to do everything in one day. To visit Petra you need about two and a half days.

To avoid any unexpected situations, it is recommended to call the embassy immediately before your upcoming vacation. Since changes in laws are constantly taking place and what was relevant yesterday may no longer be valid. Also check the exchange rates. In the Kingdom of Jordan it has been stable for many years, but unpleasant surprises may occur.

To Jordan without a visa with a licensed guide

You can travel by train to Jordan without a visa if you simultaneously meet 4 conditions:

  1. Accompanied by a licensed Jordanian guide.
  2. The group consists of at least 5 tourists.
  3. Your stay in Jordan must be at least 2 nights.
  4. Availability of a return ticket.

List of visa-free and transit countries for Belarusians in 2021

If you have the opportunity to relax, but don’t have the time or just the desire to deal with paperwork, or maybe this procedure generally puts you in a state of stress, a visa-free regime is exactly what you need. A visa-free holiday is quite possible for Belarusians. You can avoid the visa regime and have a good rest in places that will amaze you with their uniqueness.

2018 opens a new stage of travel for everyone. If you look at the calendar of holidays and weekends, you can add a few more days of rest provided by the state to the traditional vacation. All that remains is to decide on a place where you can go without a visa from Belarus.

It is worth recalling that the function of an internal identity card and a foreign passport is performed by the same document. On the one hand, this is convenient (you don’t need to get a passport, you always have it at hand), but on the other hand, it creates certain difficulties (for example, if you applied for a Schengen visa and then go without documents for a week).

To plan your trips, check out the current list of countries that do not require a pre-issued visa.

Visa-free to Jordan with Jordan Pass

What is Jordan Pass and conditions of use

Jordan Pass (JordanPass) is a paid single electronic ticket that gives the right to visit most of the country’s museums and attractions (more than 30) and one-time visa-free entry into Jordan.

Entry into Jordan without a visa using the Jordan-Pass has a condition: your stay in the country must be at least 3 nights . If this condition is not met, upon departure you may be required to pay the full cost of the visa 40 JOD + exit fee 10 JOD. If departure is carried out through the Eilat-Aqaba border crossing, then an additional free economic zone exit fee of 20 JOD will be charged (if you present proof that you visited Petra, this fee is not paid).

This means that if all conditions are met (min. 3 nights and a visit to Petra), then there should be ! However, the issue remains controversial about the exit tax of 10 JOD, which at the end of 2015 was apparently canceled for tourists with a stay of more than 3 nights, but no links to official sources can be found, and border guards demand that it be paid in any case. Although there were situations when tourists still did not pay this fee, citing the new rules.

Attractions included in JordanPass

With a single ticket you can visit more than 30 attractions of Jordan (where I know, the entry cost is indicated without a DP):

  • Aqaba Castle + Museum – 1 JOD ($4).
  • Wadi Rum Desert (entrance ticket) – 5 JOD ($7). Our report on the trip to the Wadi Rum desert =>>
  • Petra (1,2 or 3 days) – 50 JOD ($70.5), 55 JOD ($77.5) or 60 JOD ($84.5).
  • Château de Chaubac (Montreal) – free.
  • El Karak Castle + Museum – 2 JOD ($2.8).
  • Dead Sea Museum – ?
  • Ruins of Mukavir - free.
  • Archaeological Museum of Madaba + Archaeological Park in Madaba + Ruins of the Church of the Apostles in Madaba – 3 JOD ($4.2).
  • Runes of the Burnt Palace in Madaba - ?
  • Al-Abd Castle (Iraq Al-Amir) – ?
  • Ruins of Um-Ar-Rasas – ?
  • Mashatta Castle – ?
  • Citadel in Amman + museum – 3 JOD ($4.2).
  • Roman Theater in Amman – 1 JOD ($1.4).
  • Museum of Popular Traditions in Amman - ?
  • Museum of As-Salt – ?
  • Historical Museum of As-Salt - ?
  • Ajlun Castle – 3 JOD ($2).
  • Monastery of St. Elijah – ?
  • Ruins of the Roman city of Jerash – 10 JOD ($14.1).
  • Ruins of Pella - free for now.
  • Ruins of Um-Queis + museum – ?
  • Museum of Irbid - ?
  • Ruins of St. George's Church in Rihat – ?
  • Ruins of Um Al-Jemal - free.
  • Al Hallabat Castle – ?
  • Hammam Castle – free.
  • Al Azraq Castle – ?
  • Amra Castle – ?
  • Al Haranna Castle – ?
  • A certain castle or city of Al-Hamimah - ?

As you can see, admission to some attractions is already free, so Jordanian marketers are a little tricky by listing them in the objects included in the Jordan Pass. On the other hand, not many tourists go to such places, but thanks to the minimal information on the official JordanPass website, I at least learned about their existence and tried to cover them as much as possible during our trip. I marked what we visited in blue on the list. We had to see some things only from afar, driving past, for example, the Roman Theater in Amman, Al-Hallabat Castle, the Dead Sea Museum, and the ruins of Mukawir.

The cost of the DP does not include visits to religious . For example, the site of the baptism of Jesus, Mount Nebo and active churches with ancient mosaics in Madaba.

Types of tickets and prices

There are three types of Jordan Pass tickets at different prices:

  • One day in Petra – 70 JOD ($99).
  • Two days in Petra – 75 JOD ($106).
  • Three days in Petra – 80 JOD ($113).

In fact, the difference in price arises only due to the number of days visiting Petra; all other advantages are identical.

Jordan visa price
Jordan-Pass ticket prices

Recently, for an additional fee of 8 JOD ($11.3), it is possible to include a visit to the place of Jesus’ baptism in the ticket (so it costs 12 JOD).

When purchasing a ticket, you also pay a processing fee of 2.83% of the amount - from 1.98 to 2.49 JOD per ticket depending on the type and additional options.

As for the payback, we would have spent more than 75 JOD on the attractions visited alone without having DP. And we bought it for 70 JOD + we didn’t have to purchase a visa. So for active travel, the benefits are obvious. Without taking into account a visa, the ticket pays for itself when visiting Petra + the Wadi Rum desert + Jerash and several castles or museums.

Borders

In a visa-free manner with the Jordan Pass, you can arrive in Jordan at Amman airport, through the land borders with Israel Eilat - Aqaba (Yitzhak Rabin / Arava) and Jordan River (Nahar Yarden / Sheikh Hussein).

Crossing the border from the West Bank (Allenby Bridge - King Hussein Bridge) without a visa with a DP is not possible (this is what technical support answered + this is written on the official JordanPass website).

Borders of Jordan and Israel according to the Jordan Pass
Borders of Jordan and Israel according to the Jordan Pass

Let me remind you that when arriving at Aqaba airport and arriving in Aqaba through the sea border with Egypt from Nuweiba, entry into Jordan will in any case be carried out visa-free (ASEZA SEZ).

Our experience using DP

Here I will share some personal observations and practical experiences related to using JordanPass. We bought tickets while in Eilat, on the eve of leaving Israel for Jordan, having previously contacted technical support regarding some issues.

We paid for a taxi . When leaving Israel through land borders, an exit tax of 101 shekels is required . per person + 5 shekels. per group. The two of us paid 207 shekels. (101*2+5).

At the Jordanian border, we waited for about half an hour while the border guards rushed around with our passports and a printout of the Jordan Pass. Then we were invited to the boss’s office, where he asked several general questions, such as who we are, where we are from, whether we are married, how many days we are going to be in the country. Then we were allowed into Jordan. All! were no fees on the Jordanian side . To get to Aqaba you need to take a taxi , the cost is from 10JOD ($14) and higher (as agreed). Taxi drivers wait immediately behind the checkpoint. At the exit there is a table with government taxi prices; you can point them out to drivers, bringing down the price.

I have prepared a separate article about Jordan’s borders with Israel, Syria, Iraq and Saudi Arabia with marks on the map. There she also talked about all sorts of costs upon arrival and departure at these border points.

At the box office of attractions, employees mark the ticket in different ways: someone puts their stamp on the back side, some (a few) scan the QR code, in Petra they generally used a hole punch to mark the holes.
