Russian citizens need a visa or single-entry electronic permit to travel to Mexico. The latter is issued for free in a few seconds online. You will need to present it when purchasing a ticket to Mexico; you can stay in the country for 180 days. For multiple entry, you must obtain a visa from the Mexican Consulate. Russian tourists with a valid multi-Schengen visa from the USA, Canada, Great Britain or Japan can freely enter Mexico without a visa.

As of January 2021, all Russian citizens have the right to travel to Mexico with an electronic permit, provided they arrive by plane.

Applying for an e-visa

Citizens of Russia, Ukraine and Turkey can receive a free electronic permit for a single entry into Mexico.
To do this, you need to fill out a special form at the office. website of the National Institute of Migration of Mexico and receive a document with a unique code. It must be indicated when checking in for the flight, and the permit itself must be presented at passport control. You cannot enter the country without a printed permit. An e-visa is valid for 30 days from the date of receipt; you can stay in the country for up to 180 days. Errors and typos when filling out the form are unacceptable - they may be denied entry.
In case of inaccuracy, you need to fill out the form again, there are two attempts per day. You can apply for an electronic permit no later than 25 calendar days before your travel date. If you don’t have time, it’s better to apply for a visa 10 days before departure.

Cheap tickets to Mexico

You can fly to Mexico very cheaply if you have enough skills and luck to find inexpensive tickets, because they eat up most of the budget. Mexico is a distant country, flying there is long and expensive. You can’t argue with this axiom, but don’t rush to get upset - there are exceptions to any rule.

Our budget will be saved by such a phenomenon as charter flights . These flights are launched during the peak tourist season to transport tourists en masse. Almost all tickets are bought by tour operators for their clients who have purchased tours. But if the operator sees that his next flight is not fully loaded, then he begins to sell tickets for free seats to everyone at a good price. Often at a very good price.

My partner and I flew to Mexico from Cuba on a regular flight, but we flew home on a charter flight. I spent a long time catching cheap tickets from Mexico and a week before departure I bought us tickets for a TUIfly flight from Cancun to Brussels for 340 euros per person. A few days later the price dropped another 100 euros. It was a little disappointing, but the opposite could have happened. From Brussels we drove to Eindhoven, recharged ourselves with positive energy there, and the next morning we flew to Russia on a Pobeda flight. For our dates, this was the cheapest way to fly home.

You can also buy cheap tickets to Mexico and back for flights from Russia. There are charters from Moscow and St. Petersburg, usually planes fly every 11 days. If you're lucky, buy tickets for only 25-30 thousand rubles in both directions.

Look for inexpensive tickets on the Aviasales and Skyscanner websites - they can search for charters too. You can also look at the Turdom exchange, but there, in order to buy tickets for a charter, you need to communicate with the manager in the old fashioned way, double-check the availability of tickets and the price - this option often promises a bummer and disappointment.

You can try to find cheap tickets to Mexico and regular flights, sometimes there are good options. But be careful: usually the cheapest prices are for flights with transfers to cities in the USA, Canada and the UK, and in all these cases you will definitely need a transit visa. If it is not there, discard these options and look for direct flights or options with connections in Istanbul, Europe or Arab countries.

Conclusions . Catch cheap charter tickets to Mexico from Moscow, St. Petersburg or Brussels a week or two before your vacation, or buy tickets for regular flights on special offer about six months in advance.

Entry rules to Mexico for tourists

We suggest that you familiarize yourself with the basic rules of entry into Mexico for those who are planning to visit the country as a tourist. These rules and requirements apply to everyone who intends to visit Mexico for the purpose of tourism, visiting relatives, receiving medical care, etc., regardless of their nationality/passport, visa or electronic authorization.

Required documents

1. Valid passport . This means that your passport must be valid at the time of entry into the country. Mexico does not require that your passport be valid for the entire duration of your stay in the country. However, when purchasing tickets, most airlines will require that your passport be valid for the entire duration of your stay in Mexico (if you buy a round-trip ticket), and moreover, for an additional six months.

2. Visa . When crossing the Mexican border, you must have one of the following documents:

  • Mexico visa obtained from one of the country's consulates abroad

OR

  • Electronic permission to enter the country for tourism purposes. Its receipt is possible only for citizens of Ukraine, Russia and Turkey. Please note that with an electronic permit, you can only enter Mexico by air.

OR

  • A valid visa from Canada, the USA, Japan, the UK or any of the countries that are part of the Schengen area. The law does not specify the requirements for such a visa (that is, it must be valid at the time of entry into Mexico and not necessarily previously used to enter the country of issue). But in fact, you may be allowed to stay in Mexico not for 180 days, but less if your visa expires earlier.

OR

  • A document confirming permanent residence in Canada, the USA, Japan, the UK or any of the states that are part of the Schengen area, as well as Chile, Colombia or Peru.

You may be asked to provide the following documents selectively. Their absence may serve as a legal basis for preventing you from entering the country. The final decision is always up to the immigration officer.

3. Confirmation of the purpose of the visit to Mexico . They may be:

  • tourist voucher, hotel reservation, independent travel route around the country, etc. for tourists;
  • invitation to a business partner, copies of contracts, invitation to organizers of a business event, etc. for travelers coming to Mexico for work;
  • invitation from Mexican relatives or friends for private visits; if the letter provides guarantees to cover living and travel expenses, proof of solvency (see below) is not necessary;
  • letter of invitation from a Mexican educational institution for training courses, research projects lasting less than 180 days.

You can provide anything that demonstrates your plan to stay in Mexico, or you must explain why you do not have the necessary evidence. For example, you flew to visit a friend and will live in her house; Here's my friend's name and here's her address.

4. Evidence of solvency . Cash, traveler's checks, bank cards, etc. The purchased tour is also proof of your solvency, since it covers your basic expenses. You need to have cash at least for the first time, a few hundred dollars, plus show your bank cards and tell them the amounts that are on them.

It will also be useful (but not required) to have a bank certificate or bank account statement and a certificate of employment, all in English.

5. Return ticket to your home country or another destination. We devoted an entire article to this issue and advise you to take it seriously.

You can fill it out by hand on the plane or before passport control at the airport or land checkpoint. Some airports, such as Cancun, have electronic terminals that allow you to receive your FMM upon arrival, without having to fill out anything by hand.

Important! FMM cannot be lost! It will indicate the date of your entry into Mexico and the period of stay allowed. Upon departure, the airline counter will take it from you, and if you do not have an FMM, you will be sent to the immigration office at the airport to get a new one, and with a fine.
