Living in Malaysia - the main pros and cons

Jobs and available vacancies in Malaysia

Most countries are experiencing an acute shortage of specialists, and Malaysia is among them. Working in Malaysia is a great chance to realize yourself and climb the career ladder. This is also an excellent solution for those who want to go abroad for temporary work.

In Malaysia, the practice of hiring foreign personnel is quite common. These could be teachers, tourism specialists, engineers, programmers, nannies, waiters and other professions. Finding a job in Malaysia is not that difficult.

Advantages of the country for finding a job

To obtain a work visa, it is enough to have a higher education in the required specialty, know English, and also discuss all the nuances of obtaining a visa with the employer. If a person, after a long vacation, has taken a fancy to this country and wants to move to Malaysia for permanent residence, then looking for a permanent job is the best way out of the situation. Most people are delighted with this country and compare it with America.

The high standard of living and relatively low level of corruption in the country, tolerance towards foreigners, decent salaries, huge book sales (the largest in the world), restaurants with excellent food for every taste and beautiful nature deserve special attention.

Locals treat emigrants of any nationality very well. For Russians there is a special center for science and culture, which operates at the embassy. In Malaysia, the “cult of the white man” remains to this day. White people can easily get hired as a company representative. There are different vacancies: from an art seller to a restaurant administrator. It will be easy for a unique specialist with an excellent level of English to find a job as a teacher in a higher education institution.

Options for getting a job

The most popular areas for hiring foreign workers in 2020 in Malaysia are the IT industry, teaching, and medicine. It is also relevant to obtain a vacancy in the field of oil or gas production.

A work visa can be obtained for sales in the following categories:

  • high-quality professionals (including from the most in-demand areas);
  • study visa (for a future specialist);
  • option to open your own business in Malaysia.

People (over 50 years of age) who want to obtain the right to long-term legal residence can deposit $10,000 into a bank account. In this case, the state will issue an extendable visa. Its term is 10 years. You need to carefully consider all possible options and take action. It will be more reliable to open a visa with your employer. A vacancy can also be found locally. It is not necessary to search in advance.

The first version of documents for long-term residence cannot be issued outside the state in which a person plans to work. If it is not possible to find a vacancy for 2020 in advance, you need to enter the country and start searching locally. The required package of documents includes:

  • passport of a citizen of the Russian Federation;
  • a foreign passport containing a stamp indicating legal entry into Malaysia;
  • main document - an application that the future employer must write, or a covering letter;
  • contract (it is signed by both the employer and the person being hired);
  • 3 photographs in color.

There are also very favorable conditions for foreigners. If a person’s salary is at least 2500 MYR per month (MYR is a Malaysian currency, 1 Malaysian ringgit is approximately equal to 16 rubles), and he wants to open a visa for 2 years, then the employer will be obliged to pay a fee for this specialist. The boss must deliver the entire package of documents himself to the Malaysian Labor Department.

Under no circumstances can a person work before obtaining a visa to Malaysia.

If he is caught doing such illegal work, harsh measures may be taken: imprisonment and deportation from the country.

During the entire period of waiting for visa documents, the person must be legally staying in Malaysia. The employer and vacancy cannot be changed during the entire visa period.

If an urgent replacement is necessary, a person must notify the Malaysian Department of Labor about such an incident. A work visa can be issued to a specialist for a period of 2 or 3 years. It can be extended 4 months before the expiration date. It takes about 1 month to wait for a response on receiving visa documents from the labor department. The waiting period can take up to 4 months. It is not necessary to be in Malaysia for this entire period. You can travel outside the state and then return.

Study and find a job in Malaysia

You can legally stay in the country during the study period. The average cost of university tuition in 2021 was MYR 20,000 per month. Prices current in 2020 need to be monitored. You can take language courses. If a person enrolls in such courses, he will be provided with an extendable visa for a period of 6 months. After entering the university, you can get a similar opportunity to legally stay in the country for 1 year (can be extended).

During the entire period of study, you can actively search for employers. The courses will be useful in order to better learn Malaysian and English. Once a person completes their studies, they will need to apply for a standard work visa.

Documents for opening a business

To be able to legally reside and run your own business at the same time, you need to register your own enterprise in Malaysia. All actions are coordinated with specialized committees that regulate the activities of entrepreneurs in a particular field of activity. It is imperative to obtain special permission to hire foreigners. The department must give permission to carry out a certain type of activity.

The vacancies of director and chief accountant at the enterprise must be filled by Malaysian citizens. All other employees can be citizens of any state.

To register your own company, you will need to pay $500-2500. Be sure to hire a local lawyer (additional cost of about $2,000).

Jobs for girls in Malaysia

The main thing is to get a visa in Malaysia, and there will always be vacancies. A person without special merit in any specialty can get a job in a hotel, a prestigious spa, and other places where white people are needed to give status to the establishment.

A huge advantage of hotel jobs is the provision of free food and accommodation.

Jobs in Malaysia can be found in the modeling industry. There, white-skinned girls are often required for filming in Bollywood, especially with blue eyes and blond hair. Many people are looking for Russian-speaking nannies for children. Malaysia is a country with excellent living conditions. If you wish, you can realize yourself in it and earn good money.

Salaries

The minimum wage in Malaysia is 215 euros. This is approximately RM 1,016. The average salary is €500 (RM2,365).

An engineer in this country earns from 2,000 euros per month. This is one of the best paid professions in Malaysia. A dancer (one of the most in-demand professions) receives approximately 960 euros per month. Nannies in Malaysia earn approximately 8 to 10 euros per hour. A web programmer in this country earns about 750 euros, and a Java developer about 950 euros.

Although doctors are in great demand in this country, they receive very low wages - starting from about 600 euros. Teachers also earn a similar salary. Salaries for representatives of the restaurant and hotel complex (waiters, bartenders, hostesses, maids and cooks) usually range from 650 to 950 euros, depending on the position.

Features of labor migration to Malaysia

Malaysia's population in 2021 is 32.6 million, of which about 14.3 million are a viable workforce. In addition, the country has a large number of migrant workers from other Asian countries. All this creates significant competition for Russians when searching for work in Malaysia. Also, local authorities are interested in ensuring maximum employment for their citizens and put forward certain requirements for the employment of foreigners.

First of all , forget about working illegally in Malaysia . The country has very strict legislation on this matter; violators face large fines, deportation and even imprisonment. To move to Malaysian territory, it is necessary to find an employer in advance who will issue a work permit to the foreign applicant, after which the Malaysian Consulate will issue a work visa.

The process of reviewing applications for the employment of foreigners and issuing permits is supervised by the Malaysian Immigration Department. In most cases, in order to hire a foreign employee, a local company needs to prove extreme interest in hiring a specialist from another country due to the lack of such in the local labor market.

There are also age restrictions; a foreigner must be at least 27 years old. The exception is the IT sector, where the required age is 23 years. Typically, a work permit in Malaysia is issued for a period of 2 to 5 years. The procedure for obtaining a document is quite complex and lengthy; it can take from 2-3 months to six months.

As a rule, qualified technical specialists and company managers have a higher chance of employment and obtaining a work visa. Sometimes a minimum of 2 years of experience and a salary of at least 8 thousand Malaysian ringgit (about 1630 euros) are required.

Official information on the requirements for foreign workers can be found on the website of the Malaysian Immigration Department - imi.gov.my.

Entertainment

The average annual temperature in Kuala Lumpur is 28 degrees Celsius. Due to the difficulty of walking on the street for a long time, Malaysians take walks in air-conditioned shopping malls.

A movie ticket costs 15 ringgit (220 rubles), lunch in a chain cafe costs from 12 ringgit (175 rubles). But sometimes townspeople stay at home and prepare a complex dish according to a family recipe with the whole family.

Short-term domestic tourism is very developed. On weekends, you can fly to Tioman Island for sunsets and snorkeling, to Labuan for duty-free goods and cheap alcohol, and to Kelong Aceh for fishing and seafood. Round-trip air tickets cost about 300 ringgit (4,400 rubles) per person, a day snorkeling tour - 90 ringgit (1,300 rubles).

How much does it cost to live in Kuala Lumpur (a reminder for freelancers)

Life in Kuala Lumpur
Irina Serdyukovskaya worked for more than a year in the capital of Malaysia, Kuala Lumpur. She told us how much it costs to live in this city.

What to go for

For eternal summer, cool housing for reasonable money, delicious food and the opportunity to travel around Asia. Otherwise, this is an ordinary Asian metropolis, where there are not even any special attractions. But you can always swim and sunbathe, even if it’s the first of December on the calendar.

Malaysia is ideal for freelancers who want to spend the winter in a warm country. One month of visa-free stay is open for Russians, and three months for Europeans.

Job

Based on the experience of colleagues, it turned out that finding a job in Kuala Lumpur is not easy. Naturally, a good knowledge of English is a must. Typically, expats are sought out for management positions by various European startups. To do this, you need to already have experience working abroad and know online marketing.

In Malaysia, the e-commerce market is just beginning to develop, so there are few specialists in this industry and there is a chance that this is why you will be invited to work: to share knowledge and train staff. You can view jobs on the well-known LinkedIn and, for example, on the website jobbatical.com or search the list of startups for open vacancies angel.co/malaysia. It is worth paying attention to companies that have recently received a new round of investment; it is much more likely that they will be looking for people to hire.

Salaries for those who moved here start from 6,500 ringgit (about 100 thousand rubles). Then it really depends on the company and the specific position.

Rentals and areas of Kuala Lumpur

With housing in Malaysia, unlike Europe or Moscow, everything is simple: a large selection and affordable prices. In the capital of Malaysia, Kuala Lumpur, where there are jobs and universities, there is a lot of new housing, and renting it will not be a problem. Russians and Europeans are considered respectable tenants, since they do not cook, for example, with a lot of spices, like the Indians (by the way, there are a lot of them here).

For 2,500 ringgit (37 thousand rubles) you can rent a studio of 33 sq. m. m in an elite residential complex with security, a swimming pool overlooking the city, cool common areas for recreation and barbecue and a gym. For the same amount you can rent a two-story apartment in a not new building and a simpler area. And there will also be a swimming pool, a gym and recreation areas. Prices are valid under the condition of a contract for at least six months, just a month will be a little more expensive.

You can rent for a smaller amount - for 1700-1800 ringgit - a quite good studio, just in a simpler house. The only problem with cheaper housing is the neighbors. Conventionally: the more expensive the property, the less likely it is that your house will smell of Indian spices.

Kuala Lumpur has several areas where expats live. You can live in the very center near the main attraction - the Petronas Towers. The plus is that you have everything nearby, but the minus is the crowds of tourists and the feeling of a metropolis.

Communal payments

In addition to rent, you need to pay for water and electricity every month. On average, for a studio using air conditioning at night and a washing machine a couple of times a week and drying twice a month, it costs 200 ringgit (3,500 rubles). I paid no more than 250-300 rubles for water.

Plus, once every six months you pay something like a housing tax, which is also paid by the tenant. About 100-150 ringgit.

Additionally, you can install the Internet in your new home or simply pay for the owner’s fee. Connection costs about 7,000 rubles, about 800 rubles per month.

Food

Local food is rice with chicken in different variations or noodles with chicken. Malay cuisine lacks variety and, in my opinion, taste. Spicy and fatty, but cheap. Rice with chicken in a street cafe-market will cost 5-7 ringgit (100 rubles). Locals only eat there, although they often complain of stomach upsets. And be prepared for the fact that there may be cockroaches in such markets.

For those who want something a little more interesting, Malaysia has a wide variety of Asian food: Thai, Indonesian, Indian, Chinese and Japanese. Yes, there will also be rice in different variations, but due to the spices and different ways of cooking chicken, fish and vegetables, it turns out tasty and interesting. I would like to make a special mention of the salmon: there is a lot of it, and in the cafe they bring you not translucent pieces, but good slices.

When you get tired of eating Asian food, you can also find European food. But keep in mind that they don’t know how to cook steaks, burgers and pasta here. It will be expensive and tasteless.

The best options are healthy food cafes, where you can put together your own salad for 25 ringgit (400 rubles), or cook at home.

The meat is expensive because it comes from Australia. By the way, Malaysia is a Muslim country, so all supermarkets have a halal section.

Alcohol is also expensive: a glass of wine costs an average of 35 ringgit (550 rubles). A bottle in a supermarket - from 60 ringgit.

By the way, in Kuala Lumpur there are many cafes with breakfast (15-35 ringgit) and delicious coffee (8-12 ringgit).

Transport

The simplest and most inexpensive form of transport in Kuala Lumpur is a taxi: from 6 ringgit (about 100 rubles) for a 10-minute drive. We traveled only on it for a year, since we lived close to the office, it was very profitable.

Kuala Lumpur has a metro and even free buses in the city center. But the location of the stops is inconvenient, and it is easier and sometimes even cheaper to take a taxi for several people.

Leisure

Get ready for the fact that Malaysians are not used to walking, just like their city. Almost everywhere in Kuala Lumpur the roads are like the Third Ring in Moscow. But you can still take a walk in your area. True, it’s hot: during the day you can really stand it outside for 15 minutes, then you run under the air conditioning.

In the capital of Malaysia there are many shopping centers, around which all the leisure time of local residents is concentrated: eating, buying things and groceries, going to the cinema and just taking a walk. On weekends in large shopping centers - like in Moscow in subway crossings during rush hour.

For foreigners, as many locals laugh, there are other entertainments besides shopping centers and sitting at home watching TV. You can walk into the jungle, climb the hills that surround the city, and look for waterfalls. But be aware that the jungle is home to leeches, snakes and mosquitoes that carry dengue fever. I do not recommend going on such hikes on your own without locals.

Safer activities: tennis, badminton, wakeboard and climbing wall. There are also cool bars in Kuala Lumpur with live music where you can just come, grab a glass of beer or wine and enjoy.

And, of course, it is convenient to fly from Kuala Lumpur to Thailand, Bali, Vietnam, Singapore, New Zealand and Australia.
