Possibility of extension

You already know how long you can stay in Vietnam without a visa. But let’s talk now about how to extend the one that has ended. This can be done legally in three ways.

Interesting

Visa-run. This is one of the most affordable and reliable ways to get the opportunity to stay in the country for a long time. After your permit expires, you simply travel to any neighboring state. If there is an opportunity and desire, then not the neighboring one. Request an Approval Letter in advance. But all the registration will have to start again. After visiting another country, you return to Vietnam and stay there for exactly the period for which you received permission.

  1. Registration on site. This procedure is carried out by travel agencies. For such a service they will require an additional fee, the amount of which is not fixed. Otherwise, there should be no problems with the extension. To do this, do not violate the law and rules of stay. Although it is possible to extend the period of stay in the country by 90 days, the authorities rarely do so. It will be much easier to get permission for a month.
  2. Applying for a work visa. This procedure is carried out by the official employer. Even if you came to Vietnam for the purpose of tourism, you are not prohibited from obtaining a work permit for legal stay and work.

Vietnam on the world map

If you decide to find the Socialist Republic of Vietnam on the map, turn your attention to Southeast Asia, to the huge Indochina peninsula. On its eastern side, a small country of interest stretches out like a ribbon along its entire perimeter.

From the eastern part it is washed by the South China Sea, from the western part there are the borders of two states, Laos and Cambodia. A small piece of land on the northern side represents the state border between China and Vietnam.

Location of Vietnam on the world map

If we take the border with Laos, then it is the longest of the land borders; Cambodia and Vietnam have the second longest length. Vietnam's area is only 331,210 km2, but it stretches over 1,750 km. Due to the meridian extension, the country’s natural zones differ markedly from each other. There is also a climatic difference between the north, center and south of the state.

The presence of different climatic zones, nature reserves, beautiful nature, etc. make the Republic of Vietnam a wonderful place for an active, unforgettable holiday. The presence of a large number of beaches attracts hundreds of thousands of tourists here every year.

The Vietnamese are quite loyal, so they usually turn a blind eye to an extra day in the country. By law, for every day you violate the visa regime, you must pay a $5 fine. There are cases when customs officers managed to force unlucky tourists to “fork out” even for a more significant amount.

The procedure for crossing the border without a visa is very simple. Regardless of whether you arrived by plane or entered the country by land from Laos, China or Cambodia, at the border post you present the necessary documents, receive a stamp in your passport and move on to enjoy the beauty of Vietnam.

Phu Quoc - an island of visa exceptions

Vietnam also includes the island of Phu Quoc with special visa rules for all foreigners. If you are planning a holiday there and do not intend to stay on its territory for more than 30 days, you will not need an entry permit.

If you, after the island, want to go to other places in Vietnam, the days of your stay on the island will be subtracted from your 15 days that you can stay in the country. Therefore, it is better, when choosing it as one of the points on the tourist route, to put the island at the end of the list of visits.

What do you need to present upon arrival for a visa-free visit?

Just because you don't need a visa doesn't mean there won't be any controls upon arrival. You need to go through passport control and show your foreign passport, as well as a return ticket or its reservation. Tickets are rarely of interest to customs officials.

However, it is advisable for the tourist to be prepared to present this document, since if checked, the lack of a return ticket may result in the tourist being denied permission to visit Vietnam.

    This significant advantage is often an advantage in choosing a place to travel.

    All international airports in Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, Da Nang and Nha Trang issue visas. There are two ways to obtain a visa: upon arrival at the airport or at home at the Vietnamese consulate. The first, simpler one, is to get a visa upon arrival at the airport.

Obtaining a Vietnam visa

If you plan to repeatedly cross the borders of Vietnam in the coming months, or intend to stay in it for more than two weeks, then you need to contact the migration services for a visa. The shortest period for which this document is issued is a month. This type of term can be not only single, but also multiple. A 90-day permit has multiple status.

The video explains Vietnam visa categories.

The most difficult thing is to get a work visa. Such permission is issued only to highly qualified specialists in popular areas of industry, culture, etc. As a rule, there are no problems with other types of visas.

You can apply either at the Vietnamese Embassy in Russia or at embassies in other countries.

The following must be included in the package of documents:

  • A personally completed questionnaire, the data of which coincides with the rest of the documents. You can fill it out manually or on a computer. Both the manual and computer versions must be personally signed by the applicant.

Vietnam visa application forms can be found here.

Sample of filling out an application form for a visa to Vietnam

  • International passport. The requirements for it are standard: a document valid at the time of submission, with a validity period of more than 180 days.
  • Two high-quality photos 4 x 6 cm. The face should be clear and open. It is advisable not to wear hats when taking photographs. Only headdresses of a religious or national nature are allowed. The photograph must be taken no later than six months from the date of submission.

If you contacted consular services regarding a visa, you do not need to request an Approval Letter.

Don't forget about insurance.

Extension of an existing visa

If there is a possibility that a Russian citizen will stay in Vietnam and thereby exceed the period of visa-free stay, then he will need to take care of extending his visa, or rather obtaining a new one. To renew, you need to contact a special agency, whose contact details can be found from your tour operator, or through the hotline of the Russian consulate.

Important! Moreover, you should contact them at least a week before the expiration of 15 days, since the extension may be delayed.

The cost of such a procedure varies depending on the rush of the applicant and the period for which he wishes to extend his stay.

Extension of a visa

If you need to stay in Vietnam for a period longer than that indicated on the stamp, you can request an extension of your permit while in Vietnam. Depending on the length of stay, you can choose one of two options: 30 or 90 days. As a rule, the second requires compelling reasons.

The extension is carried out by the State Department for Visa Issues; you can also apply not directly, but through intermediaries. This is convenient if you are far from services that provide renewals. Intermediaries charge from 25 to 50 dollars for their services. Much depends on the timing, complexity and ambitions of the intermediary.

You can go to a neighboring country and get a 3-month visa there again. You can return to Vietnam on the same day. Many centenarians travel to Laos or Cambodia.

If you have a work visa, it can also be extended, but travel agencies do not provide this service. You need to contact the State Labor Department.

Visa application

To stay in Vietnam for more than 15 days without leaving, you need to apply for a visa at the consulate, or go with an Approval letter to get it on the spot.

What is an Approval letter?

Sample Approval letter
Approval letter is the so-called visa support, a document according to which a visa is issued at the airport. That is, this is an absentee permission from the authorities to enter for the duration of the visa. This is very convenient if you do not have a consulate in your city. Visa support can be obtained from a tour operator when purchasing a tour, or purchased on individual websites. At the same time, for citizens of the Russian Federation, you will not have to pay anything upon registration upon arrival (there have been cases of extortion), except for purchasing an Approval letter in advance . Its price depends on the type, duration of the visa and the specific company. On average, you can buy it for $10-50.

To purchase a confirmation, write to any of the sites that provide such services a letter with approximately the following content (you must write in English):

Hello! Me and my wife want to visit Vietnam in October 2021. Could you please make an Approval Letter for a visa on arrival at the airport (Visa Support for the Embassy in Moscow (Russia)) for the two of us. All information about our trip is attached.

After payment, 1-3 days later you will receive an email with a completed confirmation.

After arrival, you need to submit your documents to the Landing Visa counter. When your name is announced, you receive the documents and check that they are filled out correctly, after which you go to the border guards. They will affix a stay stamp for the entire duration of the visa.

Note! Written confirmation (approval) is valid only once. When leaving the country on a one-time visa, you will need to make a new confirmation for a new entry. If you need to leave for a couple of days and return, apply for a RE-Entry visa through a travel agency.

Required documents

To obtain a visa to Vietnam, you will need the following documents:

  • A completed application form (manually or on a computer), with a pasted photograph measuring 4*6 cm (color or black and white, sizes may vary slightly, do not find fault with this). The standard requirements apply to the photo, as elsewhere: no older than 6 months, a light background, 70-80% of the face, the photo is clear and the face is completely open. You can in PDF format.
  • International passport valid for more than 6 months.
  • Visa support (Approval letter) is a kind of invitation from the Vietnamese Immigration Department, which can be obtained from the inviting party. Can be purchased on many sites.

The consular fee for processing documents in the Russian Federation will vary depending on the validity period of the visa. You do not need to pay for a visa on arrival.

In 2021, on the plane you will be given a medical card to fill out, indicating the presence of illnesses or symptoms in the last 2 weeks, and which cities you have been to before. When leaving the plane, the card must be given to employees for a medical control stamp. In practice, many do not do this, but go straight to the immigration counter to be first in line.

Visa for minors

If you are traveling with children who are included in your passport, you can get one visa for two. But when registering at the embassy, you will need to pay a double fee and visa support. If you do the paperwork upon arrival, the Approval Letter (for which there will also be a fee for two) must contain information about you and the child. This mainly applies to small children; it is still better to issue a separate passport for them and take a photo; this can be done at any age. However, the cost of the visa will remain unchanged.

  • If a minor leaves the territory of the Russian Federation accompanied by a third party, you must obtain permission to leave from at least one parent, certified by a notary. If the child is accompanied by at least 1 parent or guardian, nothing needs to be done.
  • To prove your identity, you must have your child's birth certificate with you.
  • If you have previously received accompanying visas, you must attach a copy of it.

Visa extension

If you have not violated any rules, you can expect to extend your current visa for another 30 days, but only once. To do this, you need to contact a local travel agency. A single-entry visa for 1 month will cost $25, a multiple-entry visa for 3 months will cost about $50. Registration takes 5-10 days.

If you are in a country with an expired visa, you may be fined $5 for every day of illegal residence if there is a short delay. If you violate the regime for a long time, you may be blacklisted and then denied visa-free entry.

Phu Quoc Island

Visa-free entry to this island is allowed for up to 30 days. You can get here by plane from the mainland. At the airport to obtain a stamp you will need to present the following documents:

  • International passport valid for more than 6 months.
  • Return ticket or ticket reservation.

Rules for traveling with children

In Vietnam, as throughout the world, there is a uniform visa policy for children. If you are entering the country with your offspring, then the first thing you need to do is prove that he is actually yours. To do this, present either the child’s foreign passport, or, if his identity appears in your passport, a birth certificate.

If only the father or only the mother travels with the child, the customs services of Vietnam, as in other countries, will require a notarized permission from the second parent.

Third parties can travel with children only if they have a power of attorney from one of the parents, which must indicate the name of the authorized person.

List of required documents

Since Vietnam is interested in tourists from different countries, they do not create any special obstacles. This also applies to the list of required documents for obtaining any type of tourist visa. It looks like this:

  • international passport;
  • Approval Letter;
  • 2 photos;
  • scan of a bank card;
  • booking a return ticket or the ticket itself;
  • questionnaire.

The list is very modest. The only non-standard documents are an invitation letter from the receiving party. To make it easier for you to fill out the application form yourself, we present you with a sample form and the application form itself.
