Working in Dubai: where to start?

Finding a job is quite easy in many places popular with expats. But this does not apply to Dubai.

Firstly, to work in Dubai, you need a visa - the consequences of being and, especially, working in the country without a visa are so severe that it is better not to even think about it. Deportation is the least that can happen. Therefore, the best way to find a job in Dubai is to negotiate with the employer before traveling to the emirate.

Work carefully on your resume, contact a recruiting company, look at the websites of companies you are interested in in Dubai - there are always contacts of the HR department where you can find out where to send your resume. It can also be helpful to look at job openings in local online newspapers, one of which is gulfnews.com.

If you have submitted your resume, be sure to call to ensure it has been received by the right person.

Before you send your resume and cover letter, you should make sure that it matches the interests of the company. That is, first of all, you need to indicate the experience and skills that will be of interest to a particular employer. Therefore, you cannot send the same standard resume to all employers you are interested in.

The resume contains not only information about education and previous work experience, but also life position, hobbies, etc. The more detail you tell about yourself, the greater the chances of success, the more it will set you apart from your competitors. It would also be nice to add a video to your resume where you talk about yourself, as well as a motivation letter with a list of reasons why you need this job.

Be mindful of cultural differences when crafting your resume. For example, in most cases you should refrain from jokes and emoticons. While this is more or less familiar to us, it may be perceived negatively in Dubai.

If you have the opportunity, you can go to Dubai and establish contacts locally. Fortunately, Russians and Ukrainians can visit Dubai for up to 30 days without a visa. However, even if you manage to find an employer, be prepared for the fact that you will still have to return home, apply for a visa and then fly to Dubai again. This is because according to the law, even if you have already found a job while visiting Dubai, you must leave the country and apply for a work visa from abroad.

If you are a highly qualified specialist with work experience, and even in a sought-after sector, then there should be no problems with your personal job search on the spot.

Interviews with employers in Dubai also have their own characteristics. You can familiarize yourself with them in this article.

We briefly looked at the three main ways to find a job in Dubai - in person via the Internet, by visiting the country and through a recruitment agency. Perhaps the last method is the most reliable. Let's look at it in more detail.

Finding a job in Dubai through a recruitment agency

There are many local and international recruitment agencies that will be happy to help you find a job in Dubai. The advantages of finding a job through an agency are obvious - you will immediately see a list of in-demand specialties, salary ranges, employment conditions, etc. They may even help you create a good resume and advise you on other issues.

Remember that self-respecting recruiting agencies never ask for payment before employment. Typically, the reward is paid upon signing the contact, and the amount often depends on the position and future salary.

Requirements for the applicant

Requirements for employment in the UAE are standard. They are not much different from the requirements for applicants in Europe.

To get a good position, a migrant must meet the following requirements:

  • Good knowledge of English. This is a significant advantage even in specialties that do not involve communicating with people. It is easier for Russians who speak several foreign languages to find a job.
  • Nice appearance. This is important for Russians working in the entertainment and hotel business. There is still an unspoken racial segregation here: whites are paid more than migrants with dark skin color.
  • Age from 18 to 30 years. For management positions - up to 35 years.
  • No travel to Israel. Relations between these countries are very tense. A previously received visa to Israel is a reason for the immediate refusal of the applicant to obtain a job in the United Arab Emirates.

How to get a work visa in the UAE

To work in the UAE you need a special work visa - employment with a tourist permit is out of the question. It is issued only upon written request from a company legally existing in the United Arab Emirates. A tourist can only work in the organization that invited him.

How to get a work visa in the UAE

You can obtain a visa at the Embassy of the United Arab Emirates in Russia. To do this, you need to collect a complete package of documents, including an invitation from the employer. Russians, as a rule, are not refused.

Upon arrival in the country you need to apply for a resident visa. The employer must send your passport, diploma and contract to the immigration service. All migrants undergo mandatory medical examination.

It includes:

  • hepatitis test;
  • HIV test;
  • fluorography;
  • pregnancy test for women.

After legalization, you will receive an ID card - a local identification document. The visa is valid for 3 years, after which the employer must contact the immigration service again.

This niche is tightly occupied by migrants from disadvantaged Asian countries. The hotel business, for example, is inundated with Filipinos. They speak little English, but are willing to live on the couch and work for pennies.

In general, competition for vacancies without knowledge of the language in the United Arab Emirates is great, and there is no place for Russians in it.

Attitude towards Russians in the UAE

The United Arab Emirates is a Muslim country that attracts millions of migrants. Over the course of half a century, the country has transformed from a small desert town into an empire dictating its word on the world oil market. Of the 9 million, only 1 million are indigenous. All other residents migrated.

The UAE government is ready to attract specialists from all over the world and pay them decently. Therefore, the attitude towards migrants here is positive. Local residents do not divide people into “us/foe” - foreigners have the same rights as the indigenous population.

The attitude towards Russians in the UAE deserves special attention. Locals consider us to be very open and sincere people. Arabs accept Russians into their team and respect them. Friendly relations often develop between the two peoples. The only thing is that there is a stereotype about Russian drunkenness.
