Grounds for obtaining citizenship of Belarus
The following reasons are identified under which Russians can obtain Belarusian citizenship:
- on a general basis, after submitting the relevant papers and going through the full registration procedure;
- according to the concluded agreement between the countries, the participants include Russia (simplified system);
- by registering.
The right to undergo a simplified procedure applies to the following categories of persons:
- relatives of Belarusian citizens who were born outside the country;
- spouse of a citizen of the Republic of Belarus;
- a person who has qualities that interest the country;
- a child born from a marriage with a Belarusian citizen.
Business
You can obtain citizenship for running a business if you invest more than 150,000 euros in the state economy through your own entrepreneurial activity.
Birth in the Republic of Belarus
- Children born before 2002 are citizens of Belarus if the parents are citizens of the country at the time of birth. Also if the child was born directly on the territory of the country and the mother (father) is a citizen of Belarus. A child can become a citizen of the Republic if he was born outside the country, but one of the parents permanently lived in the country and was its citizen. When the mother (father) does not have citizenship of any country or is generally unknown, the born child acquires citizenship of Belarus.
- A child born after 2002 becomes a citizen of Belarus by birth, regardless of the place of birth, if the mother (father) is a citizen of the Republic of Belarus. If a child is a citizen of another state, he retains the right to choose and receive Belarusian citizenship upon reaching a certain age
Acquiring citizenship through registration
An adult who permanently resides in the territory of the Republic, as well as stateless persons, can submit an application to the Department of Internal Affairs. This right is granted to persons who were born and resided in the country before November 1991, as well as, if they are descendants, spouses of citizens of the Republic. To carry out the procedure for obtaining citizenship, these facts must be documented.
Territorial feature
A person who was born in this state or one of the parents is a citizen of the Republic of Belarus can receive a Belarusian passport on a territorial basis. The right to obtain citizenship in this manner is granted to orphans. Refugees can apply for citizenship to obtain political asylum.
To satisfy the appeal, the following grounds must be present:
- residence in the country for at least seven years;
- high achievements in various fields (sports, culture);
- to be a descendant of Belarusians;
- be a highly qualified specialist.
Adoption
From the date of adoption, the child becomes a citizen of Belarus if the applicants:
- a married couple of Belarusian citizens;
- citizen of the Republic;
- a married couple in which one is a citizen of the country or a stateless person.
After adoption, a child acquires citizenship of the Republic of Belarus upon a joint application if one of the parents is a citizen of Belarus and the other has citizenship of another state.
International agreements
In accordance with the current Agreement concluded in 2000 between Belarus, Russia, Kazakhstan, and the Kyrgyz Republic, a simplified system for acquiring citizenship has been established.
- The agreement is aimed at preserving friendly relations, ensuring human rights and freedoms and free choice of citizenship. This procedure can be implemented if the application came from a person who, before 1991, was a citizen of one of these countries, as well as in the case of close relatives living in the country.
Hiring citizens of Belarus in 2021
In many cases, the employer cannot find suitable personnel to fill the vacancy due to high demands from applicants or the lack of necessary specialists, and hiring Belarusian citizens in 2021 is a common practice to eliminate this problem. However, employers should be aware that violating regulations regarding the use of immigration laws can lead to serious consequences. But in general, hiring Belarusians will cause virtually no discomfort to HR specialists, accountants and enterprises, since a special simplified employment regime is provided for them.

The Republic of Belarus is one of the countries closest to Russia, both from a geographical point of view and in terms of cultural, economic and political ties and cooperation in these areas. Accordingly, even in the sphere of international law in matters of labor relations, the most convenient and comfortable conditions apply for Belarusians in Russia - this applies to both labor migrants themselves and Russian employers who formalize labor relations with them. Moreover, most of these features exist due to the fact that Belarus is a member of the EAEU together with Russia - thus, similar rules apply when hiring citizens of Kazakhstan.
Documentation
To acquire citizenship the following documents are required:
- an application to the relevant service, drawn up in two copies;
- passport (identity document);
- photo;
- government payment receipt.
To carry out admission under the simplified procedure, the applicant needs to collect the following package of papers:
- photo 3x4cm;
- certificate of deregistration in the state of which the person was a citizen;
- Birth certificate in the Republic of Belarus;
- Registration in the country before 1991;
- Confirmation of relationship with a citizen of Belarus.
- In case of adoption, applicants must contact the department of internal affairs at the place of registration or residence of the child with an application. Copies of the following documents must be attached to it:

If one of the parents is a citizen of the Republic, acquiring citizenship at birth does not provide for a separate procedure. In this case, the place of birth of the mother (father) does not have an effect. If a child is born on the territory of Belarus to parents with a different nationality and the state does not provide citizenship, they need to apply to the Department of Internal Affairs. The application is in any form.

A residence permit can be obtained by:
- students;
- relatives;

- investors;
- persons planning to carry out entrepreneurial activities.
The received residence permit is valid for two years, after the expiration of the period a new one valid for five years is issued.

- international passport;
- medical certificate;
- certificate of no criminal record;
- autobiography;

Citizenship
In accordance with the current Law of the Republic of Belarus “On Citizenship of the Republic of Belarus” of 2002, a person who has the citizenship of this state cannot have citizenship of another state.
To become a citizen of Belarus, you must meet the following mandatory conditions:

Granting citizenship early in exceptional cases
In 2021, changes were made to the current Law regulating the procedure for granting citizenship. In accordance with the changes, descendants (children, grandchildren) of people who lived in Belarus before the collapse of the USSR can come and become citizens without long procedures. It is not necessary to live in the country for seven years. Also, persons born or residing before November 12, 1991 are exempt from the requirement to have a USSR passport.
Belarus or Belorussia how to write correctly
Both names of the republic are correct. Belarus is the Belarusian name of the state, and Belarus is the Russian name. If we think from the point of view of Russian spelling, then, of course, it is necessary to write Belarus (with an “o” and with two “s”). For comparison. For example, we never write “Dochland”, but only “Germany”.

⊛We are not talking about the name of the state, but about the Russian version of the name of the state. You can say a thousand times that “they are writing Belarus now.” That is, with “A” and one “C”. And with a soft sign at the end. And without “YA”. This option can be called “self-designation of an independent state.” And within this state there cannot be anything else in the official documentation.
Reasons why Russians are denied citizenship of Belarus
An application for Belarusian citizenship may be refused if the following grounds exist:
- a person commits more than three offenses during his stay in the country;
- failure by a person to fulfill the duties assigned to him by the country where he lived;
- serving in institutions ensuring the security of another state;
- criminal record for crimes committed;
- providing false information and inauthentic documents.
How to write correctly - Belarus or Belarus, Belarusian or Belarusian, Belarusian or Belarusian
It has always been difficult to explain to a Russian why “Belarus” makes me cringe, why the nationality “Belarusian” somehow looks wrong, and I couldn’t understand why I intuitively want to write “Belarusian” if this word looks “wrong.”

Today, in all official international events (CIS summits, sporting competitions, trade agreements, etc.) this is strictly observed: there is only the name “Belarus”. In passports and other documents of the Republic of Belarus in Russian there is also only “Belarus”, no “Belarus”.
