Traveling with a Russian residence permit
A residence permit is, so to speak, a document for internal use in the Russian Federation. For all other countries, you remain a citizen of the state whose passport you hold. Therefore, if citizens of your country need a visa to, say, Argentina, then you will have to apply for one to travel there. Even though Argentina is visa-free for Russians.

Holders of a Russian residence permit obtain a visa for the desired state only through its Consulate on the territory of the Russian Federation. This is another difference between persons with a residence permit and Russian citizens. If Russians can simply take their documents to a travel agency and transfer all the paperwork to it, then foreigners must personally visit the consular office to obtain an entry permit.
If, in addition to a Russian residence permit, you are the happy owner of a residence permit from one of the Schengen countries, then you don’t have to bother with applying for visas to most countries of the European Union. A residence permit is already a sufficient basis for such travel.
However, be careful - not all countries of the European Union are included in the Schengen zone , and not all countries included in the Schengen agreement are members of the European Union. Thus, the UK and Ireland with a Schengen visa, although they are members of the European Union. Bulgaria, Cyprus, Romania and Croatia are also not part of the Schengen agreement, but allow you to cross their borders with a Schengen visa.
By the way, if you have a residence permit from one of these four countries (Bulgaria, Cyprus, Romania, Croatia), you will not be able to visit the Schengen countries without a visa . So, if you are thinking about applying for their residence permit for easy travel, take this fact into account.

How long to wait for a residence permit
One of the features of Russian migration legislation is a different approach to certain categories of foreign citizens. Each of them has its own deadlines for obtaining a residence permit.
Let's start with the RVP. The authorities of the Main Directorate for Migration Affairs of the Ministry of Internal Affairs are considering the application for its issuance within 2 months. When a temporary residence permit has already been received, you will have to wait about a year and then initiate the process of obtaining a residence permit.
When answering the question about how long it takes to obtain a residence permit, you need to understand that each category of foreigners has its own deadlines:
- As a general rule, after submitting the appropriate application, the competent services have 6 months to accept or refuse a residence permit.
- A program for the resettlement of compatriots has been approved in Russia. The state is interested in people with Russian roots returning to their historical homeland. If a compatriot has expressed a request to issue a residence permit, then the competent authorities consider his application within a short period of time - 2 months.
- The Russian Federation also needs foreign qualified specialists who are willing to renounce their citizenship to obtain Russian citizenship. Such persons receive a residence permit for no more than 3 months.
In 2021, shortened terms for citizens of some CIS countries still remain relevant. For example, for Belarusians.

A residence permit certifies the identity of a stateless person
The situation is different with stateless persons. The same tenth article of Federal Law No. 115 lists the papers that serve as identification documents for LBG. And among them there is a residence permit. That is, if a person does not have citizenship of any state and has gone through the process of obtaining a residence permit in Russia, then this document will prove his identity. Using a residence permit, he will be able to undergo all procedures for which citizens need a passport.
Excerpt from Federal Law-115
True, it is possible that a stateless person will encounter difficulties. Since even in government agencies, not everyone knows what a residence permit is for a stateless person and requires a passport.

What privileges does it give
Often people arriving in Russia do not understand the importance of obtaining a residence permit. However, you should familiarize yourself with the laws of the Russian Federation and find out that a residence permit provides a number of serious advantages:
- After obtaining a residence permit, a person can freely stay on the territory of the state, independently choosing an address. A person is not restricted in moving.
- You are allowed to leave Russia without collecting additional certificates. You no longer need a visa to cross the border. The only document that is presented is an identity card and a residence permit in the Russian Federation.
- A person with a residence permit can officially work in any region of the country. No special permission or patent is required to operate.
- Foreigners have access to social benefits that all citizens have. This means receiving free medical care and education, a guarantee of a pension upon reaching a certain age and having the length of service established by law. The same rights apply to payments for disability, loss of a breadwinner, and care for an incapacitated family member.
