Queue at the border with Estonia: where to book and how much the services cost

Why do you need to book a time to cross the Estonian border?

This procedure significantly saves time at the transshipment point. And crossing the border zone when booking a queue time is greatly simplified. With such advance registration, you can clear Estonian customs in less than half an hour. Without a reservation, your turn at the border of the Baltic state will have to wait from 2 to 5 hours.

Delayed reservations must be strictly adhered to in order to avoid spending long hours in a forced traffic jam at the Estonian border. Since 2014, it has become very difficult to pass the checkpoint. This especially affected car owners. For this reason, it makes more sense for them to sign up for a separate virtual queue rather than vegetate for hours in a live queue. Reservations for it are much more priority.

Crossing the border as a matter of privilege

From January 1, 2012, a person wishing to cross the Estonian border in a privileged manner must reserve a seat online.

What are the conditions?

Crossing the Estonian border with privilege is possible in the following cases:

The process of crossing the Estonian border

  1. The vehicle transports a diplomat or member of an international delegation.
  2. Transported goods deteriorate over time.
  3. The driver has an international agreement in his hands.

Influential reasons also play a significant role. These reasons mean the need for the owner of the vehicle to be present at the funeral.

What are the reasons

The basis for passing the queue in a privileged manner may be a letter or telegram. Also, a person who is late to board a plane or train on the territory of the Russian Federation may be allowed to skip the queue. The fact that there is a seriously ill minor child on board is of great importance.

In addition, citizens of this country have the right to privileged crossing of the Estonian border.

To avoid delays and unpleasant consequences, it is necessary to prepare all relevant documents in a timely manner and present them to the waiting area employee.

  • the child’s birth certificate and permission to transport him across the border without one parent, if there are children on the trip;
  • green car insurance card;
  • medical insurance from 30 thousand euros;

Since Estonia is a country of the European Union, you will naturally need a Schengen visa to enter its territory.

Who is allowed to enter Estonia during border closures?

Citizens of other categories who have a residence permit in Estonia are also allowed to cross the border:

  1. Students of vocational or higher education institutions in Estonia.
  2. Employees of Estonian enterprises.
  3. Spouses, direct descendants, ascendants of citizens or residents of Estonia. Only those who have a residence permit can cross the border.
  4. Owners of enterprises located in the country.
  5. Residents of EU countries.

Permitted to enter Estonia

  1. Employees of consular offices and diplomatic missions with their families.
  2. To everyone sent to Estonia for international cooperation in the military sphere.
  3. Medical staff sent to assist Estonian doctors.

In addition, entry is allowed for Russians and citizens of other states who ensure the operation of international cargo transportation for the delivery of medical goods and products - to drivers, forwarders, and other persons accompanying the cargo.

Important : The Border Guard and the Police Department have been ordered to allow entry only to those who do not have symptoms of coronavirus during quarantine. If a foreigner is found to have a fever, he will not be allowed to cross the border. This rule has been introduced for citizens of all states.

But not all Russians can visit Estonia - an entry ban has been introduced for citizens of the following categories:

  1. Tourists and holidaymakers crossing the border, both with an Estonian Schengen visa and with a visa-free regime.
  2. Workers on short-term contracts.
  3. Those wishing to visit friends or relatives living in Estonia.

Estonia also prohibited the entry of persons working in the country who did not manage to return before the introduction of quarantine.

Transit passengers of all types of public transport, travelers crossing the country on their own transport, as well as foreigners traveling to their homeland, if they do not have symptoms of COVID-19, are not prohibited from moving along the transit corridor.

All foreigners, both citizens of Russia and other countries, crossing the border must, in addition to the required documents, additionally provide:

  1. Information about your health status.
  2. Information about the route.

Based on the data provided by travelers, employees determine whether a particular person has been exposed to the risk of infection. Moreover, due to the coronavirus, checks are carried out both at the border and within the country, therefore, even Estonian citizens must carry documents with them.

Due to the coronavirus, the rules for entering the country have also been changed - now foreigners and their citizens are checked at the border for symptoms of the disease. There are also additional restrictions - everyone who arrives or returns to Estonia will have to undergo 2 weeks of isolation.

Through which points can you enter Estonia?

The Estonian border zone is divided into 3 checkpoints through which people travel:

  • on foot;
  • on a bicycle;
  • by car.

Reserving time in queues at checkpoints allows you to spend not the standard 4 hours at the border, but only an hour.

Ivangorod – Narva

This item is considered the most popular and largest. Tourist buses from St. Petersburg and the Leningrad region also pass through it. The Ivangorod-Narva crossing can accommodate 7 thousand people and 2 thousand vehicles. The checkpoint is approached from St. Petersburg or from the north-west of Russia. The road to Ivangorod takes 2 hours.

The location of the border is in Ivangorod, Leningrad region, on Kengiseppskoe highway, 8. The route from St. Petersburg is 120 km long, and from Moscow – 780 km. The border checkpoint operates 24 hours a day. The congestion at the Ivangorod-Narva checkpoint is explained by the fact that from here you can get to the Estonian capital very quickly.

Queue at the border with Estonia. Sign up, how to book online, electronic booking yourself, instructions

At the crossing of the checkpoint on the Russian side they will require:

  • Schengen visa in a valid passport;
  • any document that must be available;
  • technical passport of the car.

When you reach the border post, customs officers check your car and passport. And all documents will be confiscated directly at the Estonian border. Having received a stamp in their passport at the Friendship Bridge, they immediately find themselves in Narva, from which only a few kilometers remain to Tallinn.

In Ivangorod, after checking the documents, they drive along the main highway to the convoy of trucks. From this line they stop to the left and go to be checked by the Estonian border guards. Then they enter the checkpoint territory, keeping to the right, and head into the green corridor for Russian cars. Then they line up for the next passport control.

If passengers entering Estonia have items to declare, they occupy the red corridor. Everyone else can take the green one, along which the path is much shorter than the first one.

Once on the bridge, they drive to its end to the Estonian automated post. Then they slow down and drive slowly through the columns until they reach the Estonian border. After customs checks, they are sent to passport control for stamping. Then the car crosses the last barrier.

Kunichina Mountain – Koidula

The checkpoint is located in the city of Pechory, Pskov region. You approach the border via a toll road. They get to it from St. Petersburg, first along the M20 road until the turn to Pskov, and then along the A212 highway they follow to Izborsk and further to Pechory, from where they turn onto the toll highway.

The Kunichina Gora-Koidula checkpoint is not as busy as the Ivangorod-Narva checkpoint, so the queue there moves many times faster. They check your documents and car here.

At the place of arrival, luggage is declared and documents are presented for inspection. The queue for the Koidula point is in a large open parking lot. You can see your queue number on the illuminated board.

Shumilkino – Lahama

This checkpoint is the second busiest after Ivangorod-Narva. It has 4 border posts. And they move to the border point along the free Pskov-Riga road.

They travel to Shumilkino along a free route from Pskov. At the first checkpoint, the driver is given a ticket with the number of passengers. Only the driver can approach the border booth. Then they drive up to customs and passport control.

Follow the signs to select the required corridor. When the light is green, they drive up to customs and present their documents. After checking in front of the last barrier, they give back the ticket issued at the beginning and cross the Russian border, following to Lahama along the no-man's land.

At the Estonian checkpoint, everyone is checked only once. Therefore, the car owner will stop there only once. Border guards-police cars in Lahama are called for inspection with the right or left hand, depending on which row the vehicles are in. Therefore, it is necessary to constantly monitor their behavior so as not to miss their turn.

After being invited to the inspection, they drive up under the canopy where the white stop line is located, turn off the engine and hand over the previously prepared documents to the customs officer. Then the driver, together with the control officer, goes to the booth to mark the entry into the passports. Afterwards the documents are returned and the barrier is opened.

Queue at the Russia-Estonia border

Signing up for a queue time to monitor traffic flow on the border between Russia and Estonia involves using a special website on which information about this is posted in real time. The resource contains information about the number of cars in the queue and the waiting time. The situation at the border can also be viewed from video recordings of web cameras located at the checkpoint.

Only passenger buses can skip the queue at the Estonian border. To avoid misunderstandings, it is recommended that you familiarize yourself with Estonian customs regulations. When visiting the Baltic country in the autumn-winter period, your car must have winter tires. Since December 1, summer tires are generally unacceptable in Estonia: cars with them are not even allowed outside the country.

The car owner driving the car should always be the first to go to customs at the checkpoint, followed by everyone else. On Estonian roads, you must always wear your seat belt in your car and give way to pedestrians. Speed violations are also not encouraged here. When traveling, you should not forget about a reflective vest, which is best placed in a visible place in the car interior.

The queue at the border with Estonia (you can make a reservation) is divided into:

  • priority;
  • alive;
  • with advance electronic registration.

    Queue at the border with Estonia. Sign up, how to book online, electronic booking yourself, instructions

To ensure a smooth crossing of the Estonian border, you must:

  • Pre-register for a specific time and date.
  • Pay for the service in the waiting area.
  • Be aware that the waiting area in Narva has 2 technical breaks: in the morning and in the evening, from 7.50 to 8 o’clock.
  • Remember that shift changes occur at 9 am and pm. Therefore, border crossings are slowed down.
  • Change your reservation decision only 3 times, preferably 3 days before entering the country.
  • Complete all required payments for the reservation to become valid.

At the preliminary check before entering the checkpoint, the driver presents his and the passenger’s foreign passports and proceeds further to customs control, choosing the red or green corridor. Having arrived at the checkpoint, the driver alone hands over all the documents that are available. At the same time, he opens the car trunk for inspection.

At Russian border control, passengers and their driver go with their passports to a security check window to be identified and have their documents stamped that they are leaving Russia.

Next we pass a neutral zone with a duty-free store. At the Estonian border, the driver will need to hand over his passport to the police officer who approaches the car and open the trunk if he asks to do so. After passing control, entry stamps are affixed to foreign passports.

It is better to go to a duty-free store when entering Estonia, since no one is allowed there when leaving the Baltic country.

Queue at the border with Estonia. Sign up, how to book online, electronic booking yourself, instructions While you are in line at the border with Estonia, you can go to duty free.
Such outlets usually sell very cheap:

  • sweets;
  • luxury watches;
  • perfumes and eau de toilette;
  • alcohol.

In order for everything to go smoothly at the borders of Russia and Estonia without unnecessary difficulties and time costs, you need to collect all the necessary documentation in advance and sign up for the electronic queue via the Internet.

The queue with reservations has priority over live queues. But you can sign up for it only when leaving Estonia. Having decided on the border point, they arrive at it an hour before the required time. Then they begin to monitor the board, which displays information about car license plates and the exact time of the start of crossing the border.

After leaving the parking lot, it is paid at the customs post, where the owner of the car is also given a coupon indicating the right to enter the country. It is then given back near the barrier. After passport control and registration, you can proceed further beyond the border.

Queue reservation

To make the booking procedure simple and comfortable, you need to take into account some simple rules:

  • A place is reserved for a specific date and time.
  • Bookings begin three months in advance.
  • Amendments to the reservation are allowed three times, and no later than three hours before crossing the border.
  • The reservation is valid from the moment of payment.

To make passing through customs and access control faster and more comfortable, the booking service will come in handy - it significantly facilitates movement across the border, in contrast to the usual movement during the “first come first serve”.

With a successful combination of circumstances, the waiting time will be reduced by 2 times, and in a first-come, first-served queue it will take tens of hours, since the quota allocated for servicing such cars is too small.

There are three ways to reserve time for crossing the border zone with Estonia by personal vehicle:

  1. By paid phone +372-698-91-92.
  2. In the waiting area, in the parking spaces of Transservice-N (Narva, Rahu, 4a).
  3. On the electronic resource EstonianBorder.eu and EestiPiir.ee.

The cost of this service is 1.5 € . You can pay for it using a non-cash payment using a credit card, when pre-ordering a reservation online, or by phone. You can use your debit card in the Transservice-N parking lot.

You can order a queue for free if you access automated services through the self-service machine in the waiting area at the time of vehicle registration. It should be remembered that the maximum stay time in the waiting area is 15 minutes, because after registration the driver receives permission to leave it to undergo the following procedures. Movement through this zone is mandatory.

Excitement during the holidays

If on weekdays the border clearance at the Estonian checkpoint is not very long, then during the holiday tourist rush people wait in lines of cars for 8 hours or more. In addition to the New Year holidays, there is also a particularly large queue:

  • in the last week of summer;
  • from November 1 to November 4;
  • from May 1 to May 10.

The festive rush at the entrance to Estonia begins at 8 am and ends by noon. It is difficult to travel back to Russia from 14.00 to 18.00. Sometimes it happened that the number of cars in the queue reached 500. Those waiting stood in such a traffic jam for almost a day.

In view of these circumstances, it is recommended to more carefully choose the time to cross the Russian-Estonian border during holidays and peak days.

Information for pet owners

Some travelers take their pets with them. This is not prohibited, especially if traveling with children.

At the same time, you need to remember the rules for importing cats, dogs, rats, ferrets and rabbits into Estonia. Thus, no more than five animals can be transported freely. Each pet must be microchipped.

Checking your pet's chip

A special microchip can be obtained from a veterinary clinic, where the animal is issued a passport or a valid certificate. Every animal must be vaccinated against rabies. This is especially true for dogs. It is important to remember that in order to import large dogs, as well as breeds considered dangerous in Estonia, it is necessary to prepare the appropriate documents. The list of dangerous breeds can be obtained from the staff of the diplomatic institution.

All vaccinations given must be noted on the certificate. If a Russian traveler plans to bring more than five animals to the Estonian side, then it is important to understand that this will be regarded as carrying out trading activities. In this case, each animal will need to be declared.

Booking methods

You can pre-register for the queue when leaving Estonia for Russia:

  • Via the Internet through the GoSwift resource. This website allows you to reserve available seats at any time before your trip. In this case, you can change your decision three times.

  • By phone.
  • By receiving a reservation coupon for any of the waiting areas. First, they take the first-come-first-serve line, and then purchase a ticket completely free of charge at a special window. But sometimes they wait up to 8 hours, since the queue is already occupied by those who have resorted to electronic booking.

Possibility of pre-registration

Every day thousands of people cross the border between Estonia and Russia in private vehicles and on buses.
In front of the customs inspection point, traffic jams can accumulate for many hours. The Estonian Border Guard makes it possible to reserve a place in the border queue electronically, which will allow travelers to spend less time near the border checkpoint waiting in line for inspection.

This is especially true for those who cross the border with their own transport, since a separate queue is allocated for buses to clear customs. When traveling by car or motorcycle, booking a queue will save a lot of time.

You can book an electronic queue when traveling from Estonia to Russia. It is not possible to pre-order departure from Russia - you must wait in a live queue.

Online booking procedure

To pre-register in the queue, you will need to perform the following actions:

  1. Register on the GoSwift website, preferably indicating a phone number or email address, in order to then receive notifications about progress. This procedure is standard, as on any Internet sites.
  2. Go to the booking page to select a vehicle and a checkpoint to cross the border.
  3. Select queue type. Those booked in advance are marked as a reserve.
  4. Choosing the optimal time to go through the queue.
  5. Fill out a questionnaire about yourself and your car.
  6. Choice of additional services.
  7. Confirmation of your reservation by agreeing to all terms and conditions offered.

Reasons for refusal

They could be:

  • failure to appear at the border on time;
  • incomplete or incorrect entry of information about yourself or the car;
  • lack of necessary documentation.

You will be notified of a successful booking by a letter sent to your email address. The allowed number of times data can be changed is 3. Corrections must be made 3 days before the intended departure. In this case, only the time of crossing the border is changed. In the event that you need to leave from another checkpoint, the current reservation is canceled and a new one is made.

If you do not show up at the border checkpoint within the hour specified in your reservation, you will be thrown to the end of the line. If SMS notification is connected, an alert will remind you of the departure date, indicating the time by which you need to arrive at the border checkpoint. The second message will indicate the number of the place in the queue.

How to cross the border according to your turn

When approaching the checkpoint at the appointed time, they stop near the barrier and provide the inspection person with their license and foreign passports, theirs and those of their passengers. Then they drive to the waiting area. If additional services were not selected when booking the queue, you can still use them by paying in cash on the spot.

But it also happens that drivers want to save on comfort. Then they wait their turn in the parking lot, in the car. After the car number is displayed on the board or after notification by mail or telephone, they proceed to customs control.

At the end of the Estonian inspection, drivers go to customs and take a form there to indicate the amount of gasoline remaining in the car. Next, this paper must be confirmed by the controlling employee by putting a stamp on it. The driver and passengers must carefully ensure that not a single stamp is missed. All stamps must be of excellent quality.

Do I need to reserve a queue on the way back to Russia?

The queue at the border with Estonia (you can register for it in advance) when leaving for Russia goes much faster when you book a time. And without this, drivers sometimes stand idle for almost 12 hours at the checkpoint.

After receiving the reservation, they arrive at the checkpoint within 60 minutes. until the required time. Next they stop at a special area with an electronic scoreboard. After the number of your own car is displayed on it, you go to customs to receive a coupon.

Then they form a line of registered cars and gradually move towards the barrier. Once near it, they present a ticket and undergo a passport check. That's all, the border between Estonia and Russia has been crossed.

How much does the reservation and additional services cost?

When reserving a place in line at the border on the Internet or by phone, you can pay for the service using a bank card. If the driver registers in the live queue directly in the waiting area of one of the checkpoints, he can pay in cash.
