How to check the validity of a Russian passport

Data analysis

You can check the validity of your passport on the FMS website - the information service is located at guvm.mvd.rf. On the “Citizens of Russia” tab there is a link to the list of certificates declared invalid.

Public posting of such information does not violate the law and does not disclose personal information. Evidence that has lost its significance includes:

  • lost (stolen);
  • issued on lost (stolen) forms;
  • declared invalid;
  • issued in violation of the established regulations.

Citizens (organizations) can check their counterparty's passport online for validity. The employer has the right to “search the database” of potential employees. Business partners should also check in with each other to avoid problems.

On the UMFS portal, this information is publicly available, so its use cannot be considered an invasion of privacy or industrial espionage.

You should not use invalid documents. Russians who fail to paste a photograph on time will face a fine. It will not be possible to complete official papers using an expired ID.

Checking your passport for validity is necessary if:

  • the deadline for replacement has been reached (the age of 20 and 45 has arrived), but the Russian has not changed the document;
  • gender changed;
  • appearance has changed significantly;
  • personal data has changed;
  • errors and inaccuracies were made;
  • The certificate is damaged or has defects.

The Federal Migration Service changes your passport within 10 days when applying at your place of permanent residence. Those temporarily registered who applied in the region of their actual residence will have to wait 60 days. Replacement costs 200 rubles.

Data Analysis Procedure

The passport database contains anonymized information. You can find out the validity of a Russian citizen’s passport if you enter the information from the document. Information about the last name, first name, and patronymic of a Russian is not enough .

The official website of the FMS offers to download a file containing a list of passports (series, number) declared invalid. There is no information about the person or the place where the certificate was issued.

Checking the validity of your passport takes a few minutes. The procedure is available without registration on the portal fms.gov.ru (gov.ru).

You can confirm the validity of your passport data at the Federal Migration Service. Write a corresponding application, indicate the information of the passport of a citizen of the Russian Federation and take the application to the migration service employees. You will have to wait 30 days for a response: this is the period given to authorities to respond to requests from applicants.

Russian passport: appearance and contents

The passport of a citizen of the Russian Federation looks quite presentable: a small book of 20 pages with an embossed dark red cover. On the cover there is the state emblem and the inscriptions in gold “Russian Federation” and “Passport”.

In all subjects of the Federation, a uniform passport is issued; any republic-subject of the Russian Federation has the right to issue, having previously agreed with the Ministry of Internal Affairs and the Heraldic Council of the Russian Federation, its own passport insert with the image of its own coat of arms and duplication of passport data in the national language.

and is subject to subsequent replacement at 20 and 45 years (RF Government Decree No. 828 07/08/1997). The passport is also subject to replacement in the event of a change in personal data, gender, due to dilapidation, errors found in it and for other reasons.

The document has a series, a unique number, personal data about the owner (full name, birth information, gender, military registration, blood type).

Entry ban

On fms.gof.ru you can check the FMS blacklist. It includes foreigners who are prohibited from crossing the border of the Federation. The blacklist is checked directly on the website after creating the appropriate request. To check for a ban, you need to:

  • enter your last name, first name in Latin letters, full name in Russian letters in the special fields;
  • select gender, citizenship, date of birth;
  • indicate the type of document used for analysis, number, validity date, organization or country that issued the certificate.

By making a request, the citizen agrees that the personal data provided will be processed in accordance with Law 152-FZ of July 27, 2006.

If the documents are in order, then after filling out the fields and sending the request, the FMS website will issue an inscription indicating that there is no ban on entry into the Russian Federation. On the portal of the Federal Migration Service of Russia, a check may indicate that there are grounds to prohibit crossing the border of the Federation. The Russian Federal Migration Service website also indicates the region that initiated the introduction of restrictions. The Moscow region is indicated where the initiator was the Moscow Federal Migration Service.

The information provided is for reference only. You can get an answer that is significant from a legal point of view if you contact the Federal Migration Service of Russia.

Foreigners are prohibited from entering after deportation or administrative expulsion. Check on the website of the Federal Migration Service for the absence or existence of a ban on entry into the Federation. If the check on the entry ban for a foreign citizen shows that entry into Russia is prohibited, then customs will return the foreigner home .

Deportees are prohibited from crossing the border of the Federation for 3-5 years after departure. Sometimes foreigners learn about the existence of a ban on entry into the Russian Federation from customs officials. Citizens who survived deportation are forced to return home again; travel expenses are not compensated.

It is advisable to find out about the presence of an entry ban in advance. The FMS check carried out online allows you to display the necessary information.

The duration of the ban on entry into the Russian Federation depends on the reasons for which the deportation from Russia was carried out. A foreigner becomes an undesirable guest for 36 months if:

  • committing 2 administrative violations;
  • illegal stay without registration in the Federation for more than 120 days.

Residents of other countries are prohibited from entering for 60 months if:

  • repeated violations of the rules of stay were revealed;
  • these foreigners were previously deported and brought to administrative responsibility more than 2 times;
  • worked illegally.

These violations are known to the FMS of Russia. The official portal allows you to check the FMS blacklist and find violators among residents of other states using passport and contact information.

Why do you need to check your passport for validity?

It is useful for the citizen himself to check the validity of his Russian passport if he is planning to visit another country. This procedure allows you to eliminate refusals of exit/entry due to problems with the document and avoid a ruined vacation, business or other trip.

Reference! It is recommended to check the validity of a foreign passport before any trip, and not only if there are doubts that there are no problems with the document. In this case, it is also necessary to take into account the requirements of specific countries, for example, it will usually be difficult or impossible to enter another state if there are less than 3-6 months left until the expiration date of the existing passport.

The validity of a foreign passport may also be of interest to foreign employers or real estate sellers. They want to be sure that no problems will arise during the execution of the transaction or during the employment of the person and the performance of his work duties.

Important! Having an unconditionally valid foreign passport is not a 100% guarantee of unimpeded exit from the Russian Federation or entry into another state. For example, bailiffs may prohibit you from leaving Russia because of debts, but to visit most countries you must follow a certain procedure and draw up the appropriate documents.

Permission to temporarily reside in the Federation

Residents of other states planning to move to the Federation are required to comply with the established procedure. Upon arrival, you must contact the federal migration center, where documents are analyzed. Previously, temporary residence permits were obtained within established quotas. Changes made to regulations abolished quotas. A temporary residence permit will be issued if you have a work patent.

The patent is checked for validity by the Federal Migration Service online. You can obtain a legally significant document if you contact the department of the Federal Migration Service for foreign citizens.

Permits are issued after an inspection has been carried out by the Federal Migration Service:

  • ID cards;
  • registration certificate;
  • a receipt confirming payment of the state duty;
  • papers confirming registration with the tax service.

Not everyone succeeds in obtaining a temporary residence permit. The issuance of a permit is preceded by a verification of documents, a test of knowledge of the Russian language, the history of the Federation and traditions. The RVP takes 2 months to prepare. Checking the temporary residence permit on the FMS website is free of charge. To find out the readiness of the permit, you must enter the region, date of birth and ID number provided to obtain the permit.

In Russia, the official website provides information about the readiness of permits online. But they directly receive permits for registration in Russia from the territorial departments of the migration service. Foreigners are given a corresponding stamp in their documents. Stateless persons, after the FMS check is completed, receive a form with a photograph, personal data, date of issue, and the name of the authority that issued the certificate.

Indicators of passport invalidity

Each country has its own immigration legislation. This point must be taken into account when checking the validity of a foreign passport. It may be considered valid in one state, but no longer suitable for visiting another.

Typically, selective reasons include the time before the document expires and the number of free pages. You will not be able to enter most countries if your passport is valid for less than 3 months at the time of your planned departure. But for the USA and some other countries this time period has been increased to six months. In terms of the number of free pages, it is usually required that there be at least 2 pieces, but exceptions may also occur.

General indicators of invalidity of foreign passports also exist:

  • Expiration date. It is 5 years for a regular (paper) ID and 10 years for a passport with a chip.
  • Inconsistency between the photograph and the current appearance of the owner. This can happen due to plastic surgery, injuries, and age-related changes.
  • Any mechanical damage. Torn, torn pages, damaged cover, foreign marks, stains - all this makes a foreign passport unsuitable for use.
  • Typos and errors. They may be included in the owner’s data, as well as when filling out official information.
  • Running out of blank pages. In this case, the customs services will simply have nowhere to put the marks.
  • Changing a citizen's personal data. The most common example of such a situation is a change of surname as a result of marriage.

It is also useful to read: Replacement of a foreign passport after expiration through State Services

All general signs of invalidity can be easily determined independently. If they are found, you will have to replace your passport in accordance with the current procedure. A foreign passport may also become invalid based on the owner’s statement about its loss/theft.
